Seizures have a number of possible causes, that the vet will discuss with you. Certain breeds (Border Collies) are most prone to them than others. Sudden onset seizures can be either a result of ingestion of a foreign substance, or it can be 'idiopathic epilepsy' - i.e of unknown cause. This is basically an imbalance in the brain, the cause of which can't be discovered without extensive brain imaging like MRI scanning by a specialist, and even then maybe not.

Even without finding the cause of seizures, they can still be treated by controlling with drugs (phenobarbital, sometimes potassium bromide too). Seizures that are secondary to illness, or caused by poisoning, may cease over time.

Dogs, the same as humans, can develop lifelong epilepsy at any point. I'm sure your vet will explain all this better than I can.

It could be lead poisoning. They printed a story once in a reader's digest about an infant, and a dog developing a seizure condition at the same time for no apparent reason. At first they were going to take it as a freak coincidence until they investigated the house. The investigation discovered that the paint on the walls contained lead and the dolg and the child had been exposed when they sanded the walls to repaint. Hope this helps and that everything turns out ok for your dog.

some poisons but it would be continiuous. epilepsy occurs quite commonly in dogs also and treatment is the same. liver problems and brain tumours also cause seizures, but is sounds like epilepsy is the most likely diagnosis
