Hi there!

There are two possible key meanings of chief:

* a chief, as in a person in charge, is un jefe.
* chief used as an adjective is 'principal'.

examples:
he is the chief: es el jefe.
my chief objective: mi principal objetivo.

Best wishes!

Chief as a noun is "jefe".
In Mexico jefe is a slang term for one's father,
one's old man.
As an adjective you can use "principal".

jefe -- boss,
líder-- leader,
cacique-- chief (mainly used with indigenous groups but also can be used with political groups as well).

depends on how you want to use the word.

carnation-soul is right about the adjective part. it would be "principal"
