He was also in 2nd World war at Maryhill Bks and on Shetland Isles. I don't know his army number. He was presented with a medal in 1917 after being wounded. He was born in 1895.

Have you tried checking the WWI Medal Rolls? I found my Grandfather and my Great Uncles' details on there including their army numbers.

Click on "Searching for a card on Documents online" and the "Search" category.

Just enter his name and you should be able to match him up with the correct medal card.

Good luck!

Try a web search for THE GREAT WAR FORUM!!

The guys and gals there are very helpful.

It's based in the UK.

If in France in 1917 as a Private (Pte.) then he would have qualified for the 1914 -15 Star, The British War Medal, and the British Victory Medal, automatically, in WW2 he would probably have got the Defence Medal.

If you can get down to the Public Records' Office at Kew you appear to have enough detail to search the WW1 records. Sadly a lot of records were damaged in WW2 so your relative's records may not have survived and unfortunately you have to get someone to do the search to confirm that whether a fiche record exists. The PRO also has a basic medal index which will probably have your relatives medal record. There are also war diaries and 1st Bn Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders will have copies of its war diaries lodged in the PRO. Kew also has comprehensive orders of battle so it is easy to plot the moves of battalions as they were rebrigaged or moved during the war.

Need more information from you. Which country's military was he in (1st Argyles sounds British)? Are you looking for personal history or military records? What medal?

Otherwise, try doing a people search. There are several search engines you can use.

Good luck.
