They say that they do not "burn" crosses but rather "light" them. It's a "light and purity" rite for them I suppose. They strongly identify themselves as Christians (whether people concur or not). There are some other obscure Protestant sects who do a similar ceremony but aren't connected to the KKK in any way.

A burning cross gets a lot of attention. The cross is to symbolize the power of white Protestants over everybody else.

No, seriously. Now, this is just a guess. I don't have the inside dope.... BUT I'm sure, by now, that everybody knows how religous African-Americans were back then. Praying to GOD and Jesus was all that kept them going during slavery and for a long time afterwards. Hell, it was the slave owner's idea to get their new slaves addicted to the Bible so that they would be less likely to revolt and more likely to turn the other cheek..... for the rest of their lives.
Now, all that being said, obviously one of the KKK Jerk's most used tools was fear. The hoods. The torches. The acting like a monster......... all of that pales in comparrison to a complete and total disregard to GOD....... right? Well, if I was one of those types that dropped to my knees and started 'Praisin' Jesus" every time someone was mean to me, I'd most likely wet myself if those three armed men calling me the N-Word and threatening to torture my family suddenly pulled out the symbol of my precious GOD and set it on fire. But I'm not one of those guys. I own a sword!
