SAP actually stands for "Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung." In English, that's "Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing"

SAP is the largest business application and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution vendor and one of the biggest software providers in terms of revenue in the world.

SAP

- What is SAP?
SAP, started in 1972 by five former IBM employees in Mannheim, Germany, states that it is the world's largest inter-enterprise software company and the world's fourth-largest independent software supplier, overall.
The original name for SAP was German: Systeme, Anwendungen, Produkte, German for "Systems Applications and Products." The original SAP idea was to provide customers with the ability to interact with a common corporate database for a comprehensive range of applications. Gradually, the applications have been assembled and today many corporations, including IBM and Microsoft, are using SAP products to run their own businesses.

SAP applications, built around their latest R/3 system, provide the capability to manage financial, asset, and cost accounting, production operations and materials, personnel, plants, and archived documents. The R/3 system runs on a number of platforms including Windows 2000 and uses the client/server model. The latest version of R/3 includes a comprehensive Internet-enabled package.

SAP has recently recast its product offerings under a comprehensive Web interface, called mySAP.com, and added new e-business applications, including customer relationship management (CRM) and supply chain management (SCM).

As of January 2007, SAP, a publicly traded company, had over 38,4000 employees in over 50 countries, and more than 36,200 customers around the world. SAP is turning its attention to small- and-medium sized businesses (SMB). A recent R/3 version was provided for IBM's AS/400 platform.

SAP is a business-oriented software. It was designed to help with the management and operations of companies and it's clients and suppliers. SAP is a very specialized software that requires quite a bit of study to master. There are many career opportunities for those who wish to teach, implement, or support SAP.

SAP Business One is a program that developed for small to mid size companies. Mind you many large companies use this program too.

The program is designed to allow both employees and managers to make well informed business decisions on the operation of the company. This is done by the program giving an accurate up-to date view of the business; instant information to the finance, manufacturing and sales of the business; automatic alerts and responses to key business events; it also has the ability to grow with the changing needs.

So from what I have explained this program allows many departments to use the program at the same time without hampering the program. It is used by government departs of countries.

There are courses on this program but usually the training is done by the supplier of the program. Though you may find training within small schools or business schools.

I hope this helped. You can have a look at this site:

Standard Accounting Practice. SAPs are a set of rules by which accountants work. Very many of them and they take years to learn.

The answer above which gives you the German and English explanation is completely correct.
I used SAP for four years in a previous job and I absolutely hated it. Such complicated procedures to do the simplest tasks.
Now use Sage, and I much, much prefer it.
