Don't you hate when someone asks a silly question and someone gives a serious answer. . . .I must be really bored because here is where this term came from, lol.

Clues to the origin of "going to hell in a handbasket," meaning "deteriorating rapidly or utterly," are, unfortunately, scarce as hens' teeth. The eminent slang historian Eric Partridge, in his "Dictionary of Catchphrases," dates the term to the early 1920's. Christine Ammer, in her "Have A Nice Day -- No Problem," a dictionary of cliches, agrees that the phrase probably dates to the early 20th century, and notes that the alliteration of "hell" and "handbasket" probably contributed to the popularity of the saying. Ms. Ammer goes a bit further and ventures that, since handbaskets are "light and easily conveyed," the term "means going to hell easily and rapidly." That seems a bit of a stretch to me, but I do think the addition of "in a handbasket" (or "in a bucket," as one variant puts it) does sound more dire and hopeless than simply "going to hell."

It's a large picnic-type basket, similar to the one Red Riding Hood carried, and you can go to hell even without one.

No. You do not have to have a hand basket. I have been told, with no uncertainty I might add, that I am going to hell playing the paino.
God bless those fine people....

No it's just a term some Yuppie made up, trying to alienate the trailer trash sinner and those living in Detroit.

Brown paper bag will do just fine, I'm saving the one I use to carry around my bottle of Strawberry Boones Farm.

Any size of basket you can comfortably carry and you should make it one you like. Yes you do need one, because yo know we are planning a great big bash, but you are not getting in if you don't contribute to the goodies. Some vegan chocolate would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a basket that you can carry with your hands, I am not sure. But maybe if you have on it will be more comfortable there.
