I am in the process of writing an article for one of my summer courses and I am trying to find a place to start research. I was wondering if someone would have a website or reference to help me find out the different kinds of smokeless powders, pyrodex, there uses, and there strengths. Also if someone knows of any websites that show different laws regarding the purchasing of these products. For example in the state of IL you are required to have a FOID card but you can still purchase these products online without one. Any websites or references would be really helpful. Thank you.

There are dozens if not a hundred or more different powders in smokeless propellant. They differ in burn rate and the shape of granule.

Pyrodex is a brand name but is available in select and standard and in different size for different purposes, FFFF, FFF, FF, Cartridge. As with smokeless there are many different black power substitute companies available.

And as for age restrictions, it's 18 years of age in both Indiana and Michigan. If you are a felon you can not purchase or have in your possession and type of explosive (which any gun powder is considered) or ammunition of any type in ANY state in the USA. Some states have additional laws to safe guard this law. Due to the apparent lack of respect of the first law. Huh, imagine that!

There are hundreds made by Hodgdon, IMR, Alliant, Ramshot, Vihtavuori, Winchester, Alcan and others. Then there's the world of black powder and pyrodex.

They are indexed by their burn rate. Bullseye, I believe is the fastest. Other classifcations are double base versus single base.. Then shape acts as a characterization; there is stick, ball, flake, disc, and I am probably missing a few.

A reloading manual would describe well the differences. As far as laws go, I couldn't tell you, I always buy powder in person and have only reloaded since I was 21. I never took the time to find out.

You'll do a lot better to get hard-print reloading manuals. Hodgdon has a website with a lot of data, for instance, but it isn't nearly as good as their manual. For your purposes, I'd recommend the VihtaVuori manual as an excellent resource, but you should scan at least three or four of them.

That is a pretty tall order.

Start by searching for powder manufacturers like Hodgdon and Alliant.

Google smokeless powder; and have a stack of paper and pens handy.
