How do I identify the name of a gem if I don't know what it is called?

Take the item to a good jeweler or gemologist. Sometimes the gemstones look alike to the naked eye. They can examine it with a jeweler's loop to see the internal structure of it. They can also use a device (don't know what it is called) to test the hardness of the gem, also known as the MOH hardness scale to help determine what kind of stone it is.

You could take it to a gemologist or the local college and ask. If you post a good picture of it here I am sure someone could tell you. Or even just a really good description. That works sometimes. Mineral ID is very visual.
