You have a couple of options. You can take the NY Airport Service bus from JFK to either Port Authority Bus Terminal and take a NJ Transit bus to Secaucus or to NY Penn Station and take a NJ Transit train to Secaucus.
Alternatively you can take the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica Station and take the Long Island Rail Road into NY Penn Station. At Jamaica you can also take the E subway to Penn Station or Port Authority Bus Terminal. If you take the AirTrain to Howard Beach Station, you can take the A subway also either to Penn Station or Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Finally, you can take a taxi from JFK to either Penn Station or Port Authority Bus Terminal.
NY Airport Service costs $12/person. AirTrain ($5) + subway ($2) is $7/person. AirTrain + LIRR ($5-$7 depending on peak times) is $10-$12/person. Taxi will cost $45 from JFK generally to anywhere in Manhattan.
NJ Transit train to Secaucus will cost $3.25/person, NJ Transit bus will cost $2.55/person.

At Secaucus you'll have to arrange your own transportation (taxis) to wherever your destination address is.

My friend, the best way to get from JFK to Fair Lawn, NJ is by public transit. Step 1: take the Airtrain from the terminal to Jamaica Station. Please listen for the announcement "Station D: Jamaica Station." Step 2: at Jamaica Station, purchase a $5 MetroCard from the MetroCard Vending Machine, and exit the Airtrain system into Jamaica Station. The $5 fare will be deducted from the MetroCard, when exiting the Airtrain system at Jamaica Station. Step 3: Once thought turnstile (faregate), follow the directional signs to the Long Island Railroad. Purchase your LIRR ticket from the ticket machines on the pedestrian bridge overlooking the platform. A one way off peak ticket from Jamaica Station to Penn Station will cost you $6.25. If you're arriving on the weekends, you can purchase a CityTicket for $3.75. Once you purchase your ticket, look at the display board on the pedestrian bridge for the next arriving train bound for Penn Station. It will tell what track the next westbound train will arrive on, which is usually tracks 1, 2 or 3. Step 4 - at Penn Station, exit the LIRR train and follow the directional signs to the NJ Transit Concourse, and take any westbound train from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction, where a connection can be made to the Bergen County-Main Line, which will take you the rest of the way to Radburn, which is a stop within the town of Fair Lawn. The one way fare on the NJ Transit from New York Penn Station to Radburn via Secaucus Junctions will cost you $7.25 Step 5 - once in Radburn, take a taxi from the train station to your final destination in Fair Lawn. I hope this information is very helpful. Good luck

yeah you should fly into newark if you really want to avoid the hassle. nj transit is really reliable.
but then again, newark flights tend to be a little pricey. i guess it's just what you think of the trade off.
