The problem with glossalalia is that no one seems to know what the words mean. Semantic analysis sees a lot of repetition and a bias toward open vowels like "a" and "o", suggesting it likely could be gibberish. The "language" may simply spring from a desire to speak in "tongues".
In 1 Corinthians, Paul places an importance on the gift of Interpetation of Tongues equal to the gift of Speaking in Tongues, yet there are very few of the former and so many of the latter. If a "sign" can not be understood, how valuable (or divine) is it?

There are similar occurences that happen to tribes people in trance like states. It is a response to an emotional state brought on by euphoria created by the mind.
The biggest problem with speaking in tongues is that the language is not an 'earthly' language. So interpretation of the tongue talk is all subjective, and is usually attributed to praising Jesus.
I could interpret someone who is in a church speaking in tongues. It is a pretty good guess that the talk had something to do with the greatness of God.
Speaking in Tongues has been changed to mean talking to the angel or talking to God, but in Acts, it was a means for the Apostles to talk to the different people in their own language, who were in Jerusalem for the passover.
That doesn't happen these days. If you can show me a church where people get hit with the spirit and start talking in French, or Persian or Swahili, then I would be more apt to look at it as supernatural, but that isn't what happens in most 'spirit filled' churches. Most tongers just feel excited and start 'talking' in a language that doesn't exist on earth.
No purpose for that, because you can praise God in English.

What language did you speak?
I am a believer, but I do not think the modern "tongues" movement corresponds to what was going on in the apostolic age.
I went to some fifteen Pentecostal communities of different denominations during their evening services, and I quoted the first few paragraphs from St. John's Gospel in Greek. Nobody knew I was doing this--the Holy Spirit didn't tell them. In fact, in almost every one, somebody stood up to "interpret" what I said. Everyone got it wrong.
I systematically recorded "speaking in tongues", and found that the speakers didn't use enough phonetic diversity for what they were saying to be a language. There was even some relationship between the sounds made by members of the same community.

Anyone can produce a stream of gibberish.
If it is a tongue, then it should actually mean something and have the bearings of a language.
Analysis of recordings from people 'speaking in tongues' show that they are just making noises. There is none of the patterns and constructs that you would expect from a language.
People are just working themselves into a frenzy and doing what they expect to happen.
Let me know when you get a translation of what you said next time.

How do you explain speaking in tongues?
I would explain it by pointing out the fact that other Christians (not to mention non-Christians) *don't* speak in tongues. Why is it that the only people who speak in tongues are those who have grown up with and observed the phenomenon (and can therefore imitate it)? If it were due to the spirit of god wouldn't all Christians (if not all humans) speak in tongues as well?

You will find that more and more the Pentecostal experience is being ignored...you are blessed to know that it is all true. I am glad I received the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues before all the people in other churches..... told me, it was not for today....no offense to Baptists etc, but you are truely missing out here. To your own shame, you ignore the scriptures that teach you about this.
Speak in tongues and be happy that you found the right way.
HOW DO YOU KNOW?
Speaking in tongues was how the Apostles knew that Cornelius (the first Gentile to receive the Holy Ghost) and his family had received the Holy Ghost. In Acts 10:44-46 the Bible says, “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they … were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.”
How did Peter know the Gentiles had received the Holy Ghost? Because he heard them speak with tongues!

So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.(I Corinthians 14:22)
I totally agree but listen many non believers here will read this part of the Bible and even if they hear tongues they still wont believe because they will insist were insane or having some kind of emotional fit. I once knew this lady who went to pray for a man who was in the hospital with cancer. As she prayed she started speaking in tongues. Later the man told her that her spanish was very good. She said I dont speak spanish. My point is she prayed in tongues hers being spanish and someone else understood so its not made up. Its just truth but many people choose to be blind to the facts.
I am with you 100%

Honestly, all I've heard when people speak in tongues is jibberish. If you're lucky, someone in the crowd will pretend to be the interpreter. I attended a COG for years and I never spoke in tongues and heard the same jibberish phrases spoken over and over, but somehow it always had a different meaning.

AMEN girl!!!! You can't prove God is real until you have felt it. If more people would be open to getting the Holy Ghost, more people would believe. Its the best thing and most important thing that has ever happened to me. Because God is wonderful, amazing and forgiving, did we get the Holy Spirit. The angels in heaven are jealous of us for this blessing we get to experience, people are so selfish to say it isn't real.

Speaking in tongues during the apostolic times were actially languages for the purpose of evangelization. The modern gibberish you hear in some Pentecostal and Charismatic churches are not biblical tongues. It's only a psychologically induced phenomenon.
