They could get away with treating jews like trash...and assumed they were. But Roman citizens had more rights and more status in society.

The Romans would have an entire army there as soon as they heard of a Roman citizen harmed in any way. They would have been under orders to wipe out any who had anything to do with causing the citizen harm OR failing that, destroy the city.

Because they wanted to stone Paul and could have gotten in big trouble because he was a Roman citizen. Paul had to go to trial and stand before the Roman court before being persecuted by those who opposed him.

Because if the magistrates did something against them (like treating them as non-Romans when they were) they would have been severely punished by their superiors.

because they were roman citizens and you werent allowed to prosecute roman citizens in that way, remember they were beaten without trial
