Santa is a perverted version of a kindly man named Nicholas who went about doing good deeds long ago. He was sainted by the Catholic church - hence the name St. Nicholas.
When I was a child I was lied to about Santa. My mom didn't see any harm in it because, "after all, it is only a little white lie." So I grew up for a little while believing that presents we received came from the fat guy in the red suit. After I got older I caught my mom putting presents under the tree and it was over. Now that I am older and also a Christian I believe all lying is sin and our children reject the idea of Santa Claus completely.
I find it interesting that the Bible speaks of Satan as the father and originator of all lies. Satan slightly modified spells Santa - a lie.
Since God is perfect and cannot lie, it stands to reason that Santa is a device of the devil to pull people's attention away from Christ at Christmas and turn it to Santa and materialism which is a delight to the devil. That is about as honest as I can get.
I do want to assure those who will hop on Christmas in relation to the birth of Christ that I am totally aware of the Winter Solstice as a pagan holiday and not the actual birth of Christ. Irrespective of that - there was a time when Christ was the focus of most of the country at Christmas, and I am sure it angered the devil.

I had to address this question with my children a long time ago, and I admit I struggled with it.
In the end, I ended up lying to my oldest child because I wasnt willing to tell him the truth at the young age he was. I was not living for God at this time and had no idea that Santa , as you call him, was truely real.
How I explained the concept of Santa to the rest of the kids.
I told them the story of the wise men traveling from far away to bring gifts to the new born king. They were the very first santa's. Yes, there are lots and lots of santa's out there.
The concept of giving to another on the day we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior has changed a bit from that first Christmas, but the thought remains. We santa's give to those whom we love.

Santa exists as a cultural tradition. The tradition is based on a real historical person, St. Nicholas. So yes! I believe in Santa and the spirit of giving which is the basis for the tradition. No sensible adult believes in the magical powers which are part of the Santa fairy story used to bring excitement to children at Christmas time.

In our family, everyone gets to be Santa. During the holidays, packages appear under the tree with tags that say "From Santa".
We do not question any further when that tag line appears.
This way, we can give something out of sheer love, expecting nothing in return.
When my daughter was 5, she started questioning things. I let her in on the 'secret'. She was excited to be "in" and promptly began purchasing her "Santa" gifts for different people. The rules are that you have to wrap and tag your own "Santa" gifts, and as she was diligently writing her tags, she commented, "This must be why Santa's writing looks like Grandma's sometimes."
She is now 27 years old...... and we have a whole new generation of "Santa's" blooming.
So yes, I believe in Santa.

I believe in santa - as all good kids do. I'm just a little older but still like the idea of getting nothings from noone simply cuz I ain't got a chimney to sweep down from.
I once put out shoes and carrots and the old guy left a note saying he wanted socks instead and stole the shoes and ate the carrots!
