Ok, i've decided that i like the way i look with dreadlocks. But the thing i can't decide is how long i will keep them. If i do decide to get them i'm gonna do it by backcombing.
I realize that once i don't want dreadlocks any more i'll have to shave my head. I've thuroughly researched it, ok!
I want to hear from people who have them and have had them. What are the pros and cons? What did you not like about them? Why did you get rid of them? Why did you keep them?

hey man!!

i used to have dreadlocks for YEARS, and i'm more than happy to help you with any questions you have about them.
well, it DOES sound like you've thoroughly researched it, b/c you know how to MAKE them the *right way* (by backcombing the hair…) and you know that you WILL have chop 'em off real, real short once you don't want them any more.
i loved having them... they look super HOT to me! ; D
And… i liked the way they made me *feel*
...like: i KNOW i'm different than others, like on the inside: WHO i am is a very unique person... but you can't tell just by looking at me. i just look like a regular, pretty, dumb girl, you know what I'm saying??
but, with the DREADS... people could take one look at me and just be like "ok... she's different... who the HECK would DO that to their hair??"
lol! ...but i never cared...
i think that if you are going to commit yourself to this hairstyle, you need to be prepared to NOT CARE what others think...
that said, you probably already are the type of person who doesn't care about all that petty kind of crap...
ok so, anyways:
**pros: obviously, once they're DONE... there is zero prep time for your hair in the morning... lol! for me it was either a big fat headband to tie them back, a fat ponytail or... whatev, really... but it's not like you have to blow-dry and straighten and put products in... blah, blah, blah....
also, a HUGE pro: is again, i just think they look so sexy! really.
(obviously, some people won't think they are... but screw it! they ARE hot! ; D )
**cons: um, although i washed mine 1 - 2 times a week (girl...don’t even be like "eww..." cuz that's just how it is....!!) they DO smell a bit…. nothing HORRIBLE. I mean, if you're a generally CLEAN person you'll be fine... they just have a little bit of an earthy, head-y, dirty hair kind of smell...
**shrugs shoulders** eh, that's WHAT they ARE, so... what are you gonna do...
Next: IDK if this is a PRO or a CON: but you will get A LOT of questions about them. Seriously.
you will have to explain the whole process to people all the time... and you will have to explain that YES you wash them, and that YES they're permanent, and that YES you know that you will have to cut them off, and that NO you don't "make them" every morning (...like people think that it's a hairstyle that you wake up every morning and do.... stupids.... lol!)
um....what else??
I didn’t really NOT "not like anything" about them, I just cut them off for a couple of small reasons:
1. I was beginning to get really into running (after I cut them off, I started training for the Chicago Marathon….which was totally awesome, BTW.) so, I was constantly getting all sweaty and it was annoying to either have my hair be extra smelly or to wash them like everyday…
2. I was at an age where I had to go and get “a real job” (I now work in the mortgage industry… so… yea.. dreads wouldn’t really fly, like at all… lol!!)
3. The last reason was that I was just tired of them…I wanted a change… no biggie, you know?
…I didn’t end up hating them or anything, and I totally DO NOT regret having them!!
…in fact sometimes I wish I still had them…maybe I’ll even get them again some day… who knows? ; D
uh, yes: the last thing is that: I did NOT have to SHAVE my head… I DID have to cut my hair extremely short though… I went to an actual hair salon and had the stylist cut each dread off at the roots…leaving as much length as she could…then we went and washed my head real, REAL good, lol! And finally, she shaped up the haircut a bit so it looked like a regular short hairstyle…. It was cute actually.
So yes. I hope this helps you!!!
(And I KNOW this was waaaay too long, oh well!)
; D

dreadlocks are amazing, i think their hot, guy or girl...i just hate the tiny short dreads their not so cute.........but if you want it go for it, but if you like changing your hair alot, it's probably not the right hair style for you enless you want to look like britney spears after she put the blades to her head......you can always just but the fake dread ponytains and stuff and see how you like it :]
