When I had my male neutered the vet told me that if he tries to get to his stitches to put an old pair of boxers on him, you may have to use some sort of tape to put around the band if they are too big for the dog. It worked for me. If that still doesn't work call an emergency vet. You shouldn't put anything on it unless a vet has told you to or perscribed something.

Hi there. I am a Surgical Technician at a local vet clinic and hope to help!! First of all, your vet didn't give you the correct E-Collar (plastic collar) size... seems to be too small!!! I highly recommend that you either go to petsmart or petco and purchase a larger collar. He needs to be kept away from those stitches. You would hate for him to rip them out (they will need to be re-stitched and you will have to pay for anesthesia again) or irritate the incision sight so badly where it causes infection. Poor guy!!
Unfortunately, there are no topicals you can rub on the incision. Did you vet give you any post-op meds (Rimadyl)? Does your town/vet have an emergency clinic? They can surely see your pup and prescribe him a little Rimadyl (Rimdayl is most given to post-op patients out of all other pain meds) to take the edge off.
Good luck, please let me know how he does. Feel free to contact. Please keep him away from the stitches!
NOTE: I would like to advise you to NOT give your dog any medication people suggest on here, even if they claim to be a vet, eh. Paracetamols and Asprin are not recommended after surgery for canines. You could be doing a lot more harm than good!! Also, the "vet" above gave you dosage without even knowing the history or weight of your dog! AH! Scary!!

Poor doggie, it sounds like the dog need a longer plastic collar. If the dog can only reach the stitches with his tongue than it is normal to be licking it some but if the dog can reach his teeth to his stitches you need to figure something out. Is there a petco where you could buy another cone?

My dog was castrated last Tuesday and he was crying for a few hours and the following day and since then he has been fine....he didn't bite his stitches but did lick it a little but the wound is now healed and he is fine, Do not put anything on it...leave it alone

Just try to keep him confined and movement restricted and follow all the other orders you got from the vet until they are opened. If there seems to be extreme problem, go to another vet or pet emergency clinic in the mean time.
I know you must feel bad because your dog is uncomfortable, but in the end you did the right thing. He'll be healthier and you contributed to helping control the pet population.

Aww--I don't know what to do for sure. My dog had stitches when his intestines collapsed, but he never even touched his. Our town's vet has an emergency number and the number of another vet on his answering machine. Just try to leave a message or call another vet.

Did the vet not give you pain killers. I was given some for my dog when he went through the same surgery in January. My mut wouldnt keep the collar on so i put a muzzle on him. He healed quite quickly.

I had my 2 dogs neutered on the same day. The vet gave me some Iodine antiseptics and I was told to apply to the wounds 3 times a day for a week. My dogs hate it tho cos maybe its painful. The vet also prescribed painkillers for 3 day intake. Check with your vet.

I agree with dirst answer. Don't put anything on it if it is a fresg wound as it will act as a food for bacteria infection and might sting, anyway. Ring the on call vet NOW as he may have done some internal damage. It should not hurt like that

When I had my dog neutered, last month, they gave me a few vials of a pain killer. I actually decreased the dose because he seemed to get psychotic with the full dose, but at least I knew he wasn't hurting. They also fixed a hernia, pulled a couple teeth and micro-chipped him so maybe that is why he got pain meds. He was better in a couple days.
