I'd say it depends on your dog, my boyfriend's sister has 2 dogs, one has free roaming access to the living room because he's well behaved, the other is crated because she likes to get into trouble and eat things she's not supposed to, paper, chair legs, random food that may be laying around. You can try leaving him out and see what happens, if he begins to act up put him back in his crate.

I keep my shih tzu in a crate at night and confine her to the kitchen if I have to go to work. I just think she needs more room during the day than her crate allows. She's 3 months old and mostly house trained, but she still has the occasional accident. Maybe you could confine your dog to the kitchen or bathroom while you're gone (I use a child's gate). This will give him more room, and you can make sure he's completely trained.

I put my dogs in the crate overnight and for several hours during the day if I'm away. I put chew toys in the crate with them -- nylabones and kong chew toys. They like the crate and will sometimes go in it on their own, even if they have to nudge the door open with their noses. Dogs are den animals, and they feel comfortable and safe in a crate.
I personally wouldn't want to leave the dogs in the crate all day. But dogs sleep a lot anyway, and if you are faithful about walking and playing with them when you get home, they can be kept in the crate longer than, say, you would want to be.

Yes. My dog is crate trained/house trained. He does great in his crate. I keep a couple of little toys in it for him and make sure he has fresh water in his water bottle attached to the crate.
He really does like his crate; he will go into it while we are watching tv or eating, without being told to.

i have 2 dogs, and we didn't.my dogs didn't ruin furniture or anything, so why not? we had a nice family room that we didn't want them to go in.. just INCASE he did chew something, so we gated it off with a little gate.
they are well behaved though, so now they goes wherever they want when we aren't home. i usually don't want him in my bedroom cause i don't what dog hair on my bed, so i just close my door before i leave the house.
just make sure all food is put away in the kitchen and the trash can is shut!
some dogs like being in their crate. leave the crate door open so he can leave he wants, but he can come back, too. :)

It partly depends on how old your dog is, too. Is he past the chewing stage? Reliably housetrained? If so, then try him out. Let him have his freedom when you're only going to be gone for a short time. If he earns his freedom by not misbehaving, give him more.
All of my dogs have had the run of the house once they were reliably house trained and past the chewing stage.

You have to take the dog to the bathroom every three to four hours or they will get an infection of the insides after a while of doing it your way.
