do doctors get compensation for giving sample drugs to patients or for writing perscriptions for specific drug

Yes most of them do. My insurance covers generic and brand name drugs cost me 30.00. I ask my Dr.'s not to give me brand name if possible. That's why drug company's are making so much money. My Mom had heart surgery and they will only give her brand name, they get kick backs you can bet.
