I talked to one lady and she will charge $4500 for 250 people. This includes the food (heavy hor doureves ...spelling?), cake, and punch. Is this about right or way too much? I was thinking it would only be about $10 per person for food and around $800 for the cake. Any suggestions or comments?

$10 per person is outrageously low!! Seriously even getting Bojangles or Barbecue cooked outside will run you about that. A hotel averages $50-$70 per person but caterers run lower. $15-25 is a nice average amount that I was quoted last year at bridal shows. For 250 people, that would be 3,800-6,250. Mine ended up being right under $15.

My caterer was about 3,500 for 125 people. It included the tablecloths, silverware and glasses rental. But did not include the cake which I priced out a lot of different places with a huge range and ended up with about $300 for the cake.

The caterer price could be all over the place though--you said it was hors dourves but seafood is a lot more expensive. Also the more fruit you have adds. A lot of foods are more difficult or just the ingredients are more expensive. Hot dishes are more expensive than dishes they can prepare in advance. So really each individual item determines price. You can negotiate with her by changing out hot pasta for a cold pasta salad, or something like that.

Same with the cake. Gumpaste flowers are more, fondant icing, more complex decoration or more tiers all can change the price all over the place. Cake people often charge per slice--and a rough average of what I saw was around $1.75-2.25 a slice. So for your cake that is roughly $440-560.

I don't know where you live but I looked at 2 caterers serious--one in Snow Hill (down towards the beach) and one in Raleigh. They were the 2 cheapest I could find. Of course the more rural the area, the cheaper it will be. More expensive in Raleigh and Charlotte. But both would run about 150 people--around 3,500.

As you get the number more accurate (RSVPs come in) they will be able to change the amount. Make sure that price includes cake cutting (no additional fee for that) and the linens/silverware. But that quote is very reasonable. I'd price it out but it is very comparable for the area.

Unfortunately, that sounds about right. Especially since it includes your cake. Usually, most of your budget will go towards your reception. Maybe you can cut corners by eliminating one or two of your hors deourves, or the punch? Best of luck and congratulations!

Starts at $10 per plate and goes up depending on what you want to serve. What is included depends on the catering company and generally drinks are a separate contract. Cleanup depends on the venue.
