My 5 month old Yorkie always swallows his food! When I give him a biscuit, it takes him a good 4minutes to chew through the whole thing. And when I feed him his kibbles, he always swallows it and finishes it in less than 2minutes. So far, I've been soaking his kibbles in water and that's how he's been eating his food for two weeks. For breakfast he gets it soaked, lunch I've changed to hard kibbles now so he has time to practice chewing, and dinner he gets it soaked. Is this normal? What should I do? My mom wants me to change his food to smaller kibbles but won't that encourage his swallowing?

He doesn't mind chewing on stuffed animals, his edible nylabone, hard plastic baby keys, rawhides, etc.

P.S. He's healthy & I'm feeding him the right amount of kibbles for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Ever since I got him, he's been gaining weight. He's now a good 10 pounds and he'll only get bigger. He's not a tea cup Yorkie, when we got him we were told his parents were big Yorkies!

At 5 months old he is probley teething and it hurts to chew. Try not to soak his food this can cause his teeth to rot. He will get better look in his mouth I am sure you will see he is getting new teeth in. My dog went through this same thing a month ago and he is 6 months 1 week old now, If it dose not get better take him in for a check up

stop feeding him so much. put his kibble on a flat plate, that will slow him down.

treats should be apple slices, baby carrots or other veggies.

of course he has been gaining weight - he's a puppy.

are you going by the guidelines on the bag? you understand that is the total for the DAY - not per meal.

there is no such thing as a t-cup yorkie - & while the breed standard is no more than 7 #'s it is not unusual to find a 10 or so pound yorkie that is just a poorly bred dog from your typical back yard breeder.

just be sure he isn't overweight for his bone structure. what does your vet say?

Contrary to popular belief Yorkies can get over 10 pounds. There are NO SUCH THING as a teacup breed of anything! They use this term to get top dollar for smaller models.

Anyway......that sounds to me like it's just his "eating sytle" changing to a smaller dog food may help in digestion. I guess you can lead a dog to kibble but you cant make him chew.

Doesnt sound like a dental issue or he wouldnt chew other things. Doggies can be a little quirky sometimes. My dog will go to his bowl, get a big mouthful and then come next to me, spit the food out and eat the mouthful. She does this till her food is gone....she just likes to be near me--even when she eats. I find it very endearing.

dogs do that just give him dry food
just make sure it's the smaller kibble so he won't choke
My dogs do that all the time and they are over 5 years old
I have worked in vets offices and they have said this is normal.
Even a wolf doesn't chew it's food it tears large pieces and swallows.
