Of course you need to start out with a good quality seed that is not too old and was produced by a healthy and mature parent plant. The seeds need to be allowed to mature on the parent as long as possible. Once in the germination stage temperature and available moisture become very important. The amount of available light may affect the germination of some plants. The germination media is of secondary importance as some plants can germinate in water only, or as little as damp paper towels, sand, or sawdust. Once the plant begins to produce root hairs the media requirements become more important and necessary nutrients must be made available.

If they are in the ground, it is essentially moisture and warmth. BUT there are certain seeds like the pinion pine that requires a fire to release the seeds from the cones, as there are plants like Fire-weed.

Also, some seeds do a "survey" of soil conditions (like acidity) before they will germinate (which may be the case for Fire-weed.)

There are a whole range of conditions, and those conditions are not the same for every seed...
