I am taking care of a cokerspaniel for my friend. She was really nice at first, but when my 4 year old brother tried to pet her, she growled and bit him! I held her muzzle so my brother could try again, an she was fine. then I told him to pet her without my hand on her muzzle, and she was eying him the whole time. then she attacked him. He is ok, though. My 2 year old sister has also been bit by her. My siblings have never even seen the dog before and she is acting like they are trying to hurt her. Is there anyway to make her stop without hurting my siblings?

Cockerspaniels aren't good with children. Its something in their breed that makes them aggressive towards young children because they get scared of them. I would suggest keeping the kids away from the dog until your friend gets back.

I agree with some of the answers about is dangerous, but dont hurt the dog either... If you have in your house any space in which the dog can stay indoors or out of the reach of the kids, leave it there, or say, like in the roof or something, telling your kids not to go up and stay away from the dog. And, tell your friend, maybe you can leave him in a kennel or dog day care, they have special spaces and people trained to take care of them. By the way, is not that dogs hate kids, is just that not all dogs are suitable for kids, and even tough is a small breed, he may have a history not pleasent with kids or is just too old. They become cranky as people. :)

Cockers used to be the number 1 family dog but now they are one of the biggest biters of children.

Small kids don't know how to treat a dog & the dog knows that it is a child & wants nothing to do with them.

It is best that you not allow the small kids around the dog. Since this is just a temperary situation you are not responsable for training her. Just tell the kids to leave the dog alone or put up a baby fence & keep the dog or the kids away from one another. This way nobody gets hurt.

Cockers are not know for being family dogs, they are often frightened by children. You need to keep the dog away from the kids before someone gets seriously injured.
You should never hold a dogs muzzle just so someone can pet it, that's asking for trouble. Not only are you scareing the dog, but she will be more likely to attack after her muzzle is released.

Keep the dog away from the kids!

This dog shouldn't be left around children and you shouldn't have held the dogs muzzle to let them pet her.. Especially AFTER the dog has bitten one of the children... Maybe it's just not OBVIOUS enough to you that the dog needs to be seperated from the children.. If the dog bites it's not the dogs fault it's yours for letting the children/dog together.... I WOULD NOT let the dog around the children.... The dog should be taken somewhere w/o children until it's owner comes home...

the dog sounds like it hasn't been around children you need to keep it totally seperated from teh kids.
Your friend needs to know about this and you really need her to get the dog before someone does get hurt seriously. never let this dog near your sibblings and if you take the dog out don't let it near anyone or you can be held responsable for anything the dog might do.

Yes, they need to stop trying to pet her. She's not used to them. If she's a mature dog, she needs time to learn to trust them first. To force her to get acquainted too fast is trouble.
If they just let her be, she might come to THEM.
Try to remember, this is strange for her too.
She's in a strange house with strange people.
How would you feel if your parents dropped you off one day someplace you weren't used to, and you weren't able to communicate to find out if they were coming back or not?
She's not being mean, she's just distressed.
If she goes after the kids, then she might need to be detained with a babygate or something. But, if they are going to her, then she might be feeling threatened. Good luck, and remember, it's only temporary.

Get rid of the dog, dogs can kill a child, and obviously the dog does not like the kids. Lock it in the basement or something, you know how bad you'd feel if something did happen.

These are really nippy dogs. They have been overbred with no thought about temperament, and this is the result. She should be kept away from the children. Just so you know, cocker nippiness is not unusual at all. Many, many of them do bite.

Well new faces new people she is bound to get defensive. That breed is generally very good with kids. Ask your siblings to stroke her back and pat her on the head. Feed her some goodies. Those are friendly gestures and hopefully she should stop attacking them. Take it 'slow' is the key word here!
