You can back away while throwing punches, jabbing is usually effective while you follow up with another punch.
You can also block (right trigger, right thumstick on xbox) , and you'll push him automatically.

Press X, X, O, O, L1. This will throw him off of you and leave him open for a KO punch. I don't know what to do on anything other that Playstation. Best Answer Please

Press the button to back away from him using your right hand only, then jab at your video monitor with your left hand. That should keep him away from you : P
