I need to change the cassette on my MTB, I have an 8 speed 12/28, but i can only find a 7 speed 12/28. Would the only difference be not having 8th gear? or would it cause a problem shifting? thanks for any help

Thanks so far, so I wont buy a 7 speed, but someone suggests an 11/28 instead of the 12/28 i already have. Would that fit or cause more problems for me?

Actually, the spacing for 7 and 8 speed is the same, you would just have to put a little spacer behind the cassette on the hub because the overall width of the cassette is narrower on the 7 speed. You could then just not use one of the "clicks" on your shifter, either the low or high, but usually you would block out 1 and use 2 through 8. We do it in the shop occasionally when we run out of 7 speed shifters and can't find them from our suppliers (like right now).

Changing to a 11/28 won't cause you any problems, it will just make the bikes biggest gear a little bigger, ie, the back wheel will do more turns per pedal stroke. It is very unlikely that you will even notice the difference. Remember to change the chain if you are replacing the cassette as they are two items which wear together and you will encounter a lot of problems with the old chain slipping on the new cassette if you don't which will cause premature wear.

an 11/28 vs a 12/28 is just a matter are you wanting to go faster (11/28) or do you want to ride a more technical course (12/28).
as for shifting issues you will not notice anything with indexed shifting at all.
but if you per chance have friction shifting than a 7 speed will be fine.

NONONO... Don't do it. It is NOT a straight change.
The spacing between the gears is not the same, so you would need to get a 7 speed shifter to make this work.
You shouldn't have too hard of a time finding an 8 speed cassette. If local shops don't have one, look on the internet, or the shop can surely order one for you.

I certaintly will not work. The spacing between 7 speed and 8 speed is different. This means that whereas it may work at the bottom of the cassette, as you climb through the gears, you will become more and more "off." Try Ebay. There are tons of "new old stock" parts on there.

yea sounds like a problem, u would probably have to be careful not to shift over into that gear thats not there. your shifters are probably for 8spd too. someone else can explain better im sure.
