Women should CHECK and make sure it's down before sitting down. That's not so hard either.
This argument makes me want to slap some of the stupid women who reply and whine about it.

I really depends. I think that if a female is around, it is respectul to just put it down because that is the nice thing to do, but women are fully capable of doing it themselves--its not like we can't! But at the same time, if a man has to pull the toilet seat up, I think it is only fair for them to put it down again if there are women around for sanitary reason--why make her touch the toilet seat and put it back down if she wasn't the one that needed to put it up in the first place. If the bathroom is being shared by both male and female, why not just do the thing that is the most respectful?! At my bf house though, the toilet seat always has to be down when nobody is in the bathroom just for the pure fact that if it's not, the cat will drink out of the toilet! HAHA!

Which ever has the better memory. Ha ha ha. Personality it has never disturbers me when my husbands forgets to leave the seat down. However, since women set on the toilet backwards and not notice it up until it too late while a man faces the toilet forward and can see if it is down, I would say that it is best for the man to leave it down.

Depends. Who's the majority party? If there's more women than men, the toilet seat MUST get left DOWN. If there's one woman and the place is full of men, then she can put it down.
(And yes, I am a woman answering this question.)

I think it is the guys responsibility to leave the seat down, especially after taking a tinkle. We women already do #1 and #2 with the seat down anyway. Personally I think guys need to start doing #1 with the seat down( sit down like us women ) because your aim is bad. This way we don't have to clean up those nasty pee spots that run down the sides of the toilet. GIRLS, WHO'S WITH ME !!??

It is no one responsibility as we both use it but i think it is up to...
Men!
I dont know if anyone above me has said this because i cant be bothered to read them all there is that many but...
...Men have to use the toilet when the seat is down sometimes too, so the majority of the usage of the toilet has the seat down. so therefore, they should put the seat down.
They should put it down just to be curtious to the women!

In this house both the seat and lid are kept down or the cat will play in the water getting the seat all wet.

BOTH should put the lid down before flushing.
It's a fact that when the toilet is flushed it sprays up to 20 ft. If the lid isn't down before flushing, everything in the bathroom gets sprayed with dirty water!

Well, I put the seat down after my husband uses it. I only ask that he remembers to put it down before we go to bed if he's the last to use it, so I don't "fall in" during the night. He usually remembers. I think it's more of a courtesy for a man to put it down after he's finished, but I don't insist. Besides, unlike my brother's house where it's 3 to 1 in favor of the girls, it's 2 to 1 in favor of the guys. I think that has a lot to do with it, too.

The last person that uses the toilet. And it depends on your house rules as far as whether you can leave it up or not.

Good point, I suppose it is very rude of women to leave the seat down. How inconsiderate!?
My view is - if you don't like the position it is in when you find it, change it yourself. But I've never put the seat up after I've used it....
