I'm 27 years old with two M.A.s and I work as a professor in a university. While I do dress professionally (clothes, hair, makeup), I do have two eyebrow piercings and a labret piercing that is visible. I also have a large tattoo on my upper back that is not visible. I've never had any problems with my employers (I actually work parttime at two universities) about my appearance. However, I'm trying to look ahead in the future, as I know I probably won't be with these two employers all my life. I do know that I from now on, as my career, I will work in a university setting as a professor or I will be working on my writing career. With all that being said, I'm trying to decide if getting a wrist tattoo will be a detriment in the future as far as work goes, or if I should go for it as I have chosen careers that don't have a huge emphasis on "traditional professional" appearances. Any thoughts out there?

while tattoos are becoming more accepted, i don't think it would prove to be a big detriment to either one of your career paths. I think that college kids (myself included) can actually relate a little closer with a professor who has a tattoo, simply because you both have them creates a bond. I think you should go for it if you really want it.
As far as the whole "discrimination based on a tattoo" concept. While it is illegal for a company to discharge you for your tattoos, the tattoos may make the company look at your performance record and give them reason to fire you. Even though the basis of them wanting to fire you is because of your tattoos, they can use other causes for reason to fire your, thus making it legal. Its one of those murky situations that sucks to be in, but its legal, even though you and the employer truly know it was because of your ink

Hi there, I think if what you are getting is small and non-offensive then many employers these days will be tolerant of it. Lately I have seen 2 or 3 supermarket staff, a girl in a clothing store, department store and another girl in retail with inner wrist tattoos and one of the receptionists at the after hours Drs with one on her upper wrist (by that knobbly bone!). If it is small it should also be easy to cover up with a watch, bracelet, armband, band-aid or wrist band if necessary. Your best idea would be to sound out places you think you might like to work and find out what their policies are on visible tattoos...

Tattoos are becoming more of mainstream life daily. They (employers) are NOT allowed to discriminate due to tattoos. I think wrist tattoos are fine, I have my wrists done myself and get compliments on them all the time in the workplace. I work as a systems engineer. (I.T.). If ever in doubt at an interview, cover all tattoos, then once you are hired, what can they do? A friend of mine when we were at University went to apply for a waitress job and got it, only to be called a day later and told she didn't have it because her legs were inked. She sued the establishment and WON.

Wrist tattoos can easily be covered.
If not with a long sleeve, then a large
bracelet or watch seems to do the job.
Tattoos are becoming more and more
accepted, in all the old professions,
that once, could barely tolerate them.

No, it is discrimination for an employer to not hire you because of a tattoo on your wrist (or anywhere at all). If you would like to hide it however, a simple watch or bangles will do.

I think it is a good idea not to get it in a visible place, or a place you cannot hide. I have 3 but all hidden under my shirt, will be getting a fourth one soon. I show it off or hide them as I wish.
