Private life most definitely. It is possible to have both be successful and professional.
Just because you have a professional and successful life does not mean it can't be Private.
You don't have to socialise if you don't want too.

Your only as unexciting as you want it to be.

I can say carreerwise, I am successful a bit exciting private life but not very happy one, I would rather have a happy private life.

If you are young just starting out, then a person should want to be successful professionally because that would give him/her stability and security so that he/she could then concentrate on living a happy, private life on the fruits of his/her labour.

Tolerable is somewhat vague, but I figure that means not horrible and suffering, so why not be successful professionally and enjoy living that way, depends on where you draw the line between personal and professional, I'd probably test those limits then.
