Ok .. I have to admit I am quite annoyed at some of these answers!!!

A "designer dog" is simply taking 2 purebred dogs of desirable different breeds and breeding them to create a "best of both worlds" type puppy. The term designer came to be as people often think long and hard as to what breeds would be desirable together. Yes they can be expensive however I find that purebreeds are just as expensive if not more expensive! I know, I know they are mutes right!? Why pay so much money for the designer pups? What you are paying for is a healthy puppy that came from strong bloodlines!!!

I love my Cockapoo and truly feel that I could not have a better dog, he truly is the best of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle!!! AND FYI ... Cockapoos have been around far longer than any designer dog term has been :)

I also happen to love my rescue shelter puppy who is very well likely a "designer dog" or mutt too as he does not resemble just one breed and he has cost me more that my $875 cockapoo has!!!!

How many people who pay thousands for their purebreds actually show them anyway? Aren't the purebred breeders just out to get money too? What is the difference??? You can get just as much for a 2nd generation designer dog as you can a 1st generation!

Ok I'm stepping off my soap box for the day :)

A "designer dog" is a result of purposefully choosing to breed 2 different breeds of dogs together. The result are mixed breeds (obviously) that the owner(s) make up some cute, fancy name for by blending the names of the 2 breeds of parents. And then charge an exhorbinant fee for as "rare".

Personally, I don't see the difference between a "designer" dog and the good, old fashioned "all american", "mixed breed", "mongrel" or "mutt".

There are plenty of mixed breeds, let alone having people purposefully breeding for them.

I am also curious, and maybe some of you "designer dog breeders" out there can answer me.

Do you have the dogs hips and elbows x-rayed, do you have their eyes checked, do you have them VWD tested? Can you tell the puppy's buyers that the greatgrandparents were OFA'd?

And do keep pedigrees? Are these dogs accomplishing any "titles" that are an earmark, proof, of the breeding line's intelligence, trainability, "good citizenship"?

It is a breeding of two pure bred dogs of different breeds. Some are mixed for different reasons. They take the best of two dogs and hopefully create an even better breed. For instance the Chihuahua has 1/2 the life span as a Pomeranian ,the Chihuahua sheds and has a course feel to its hair.Sometimes their ears flop and the nose is long and head is out of proportion and not pretty at all.Maybe the body is long ,like a Dash Hound. If you take an excellent specimen of a small Pomeranian and breed it to the Chihuahua you get the best of both in the( Chiapom). That is a beautiful specimen of what looks like a perfect Chihuahua. It sheds less ,if at all, the coat is soft and shiny, ears stand up perfect (even if MOMs don't)they are perfect in perportion ,usually (Apple Head)and hopefully will live twice as long!!!Some people that can't see the potential in these Breeds are short minded and set in their ways. They do not know what they are talking about. This is not a fad or trend it has been going on for years and IS NOW BEING WRITTEN ABOUT in many books now at the pet Stores and Bookstores. Also the Chipom is much less yeppy and more of a Lap Companion Baby. And YES THEY ARE REGISTERABLE.If both parents are registered, they can be registerd as non- purebred.I personally believe that some of these breeds are an improvement overall.Regardless of the Bad wrap people are getting ,people love them and are adopting them more and more.Everyone is Not A Backyard Breeder, some people like to throw that word around and think it makes themselves look good????I think it is like calling the Kettle Black!!!!Anyway that is what some people are calling a Designer Dog.If you love it , Get it ,and don't listen to the people who don't have anything else to do but run others down.Good Luck.

It is a cross between two purebred dogs, like a labradoodle (lab+poodle). They are very popular right now but are really what I would call a glorified mutt. They are not registerable with any reputable kennel club. Since they are not registered with anyone, each of the puppies has a different look to them even within the same cross. There is no written breed standard that the breeders are trying to conform to, and since they are the "it" dog of the day, many come from backyard breeders just looking to make a quick buck and have no regard for the health of the offspring.

A designer dog is a dog with two purebred parents of different breeds, for instance a poodle and a Labrador is called a Labradoodle. A poodle and a cocker spaniel is called a Cockapoo.

I specific combination of two (or more) purebred dogs to come up with a new combo.
Such as the Cockapoo - - Cocker Spaniel/Poodle, Sheltipoo - - Sheltie/Poodle,

Personally, I think if you want a mixed breed dog, go to the shelter, don't go intentionally breeding mixes.

They are mixed breed dogs. Only difference between a so-called "designer dog" mutt and a shelter mutt is, you can adopt a shelter dog for a minimal adoption fee of about $50-$100. The BYB's that are producing these dogs are asking anywhere from $350 - $1000

Some are claiming "hypoallergenic"..... that is just a crock. Anything that has fur or hair and skin has dander!

Exactly what the guy above me said... I have a mini Labrodoodle and hes WONDERFUL!!! Amazing personality and doesn't shed, well a little now that its summer but nothing noticeable at all. He is the most well behaved and low maintenance dog I have ever owned and I would recommend "designer" bred dogs to anyone. This breed is particularly good around children and has such a sweet and loving personality and is very easy to house train.

A designer dog is a mutt with a fancy name and a high price tag.
