Every 70 K without fail. Usually it is marked on the cover of the belt when it was last changed if you do not know. 850's have interference engines if belt breaks your engine gets ruined.

This model is not known for bent valve problem. Install new timing belt, Immediately after the belt is on the gears crank the engine. If it doesn't sound normal or sounds loose/no compression then continue from there to remove the camshaft cover. I must stress that doing the cyl head on this model car is not somewhat easy and requires few special tools and knowledge. Folks who take it upon themselves to do these kind of work get a car that is either leaking oil all the time or never runs properly. It should be done by a mechanic who is familiar with this type of volvo. Good luck.

Check the owners manual and go with that. You want to make sure the timing belt does not break while you are driving because if it breaks while driving it could take out some valves which means you would need a new engine. On the safe side the timing belt should be changed every 4 years or 60,000 miles.

Depends on year, A 1993 850 gets a timing belt every 50,000 miles, every other year gets A timing belt at 70,000 miles, replace the tensioner and both pulleys, do it now if you dont know when it was changed last! if belt breaks you bend valves, and thats a big problem. May as well do a water pump when belt is replaced.

at 100k miles . put in new tensioner [hand grenade] ,tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and water pump as well as the serpentine belt.
these components may spin fine at the moment but under no circumstances be expected to last to the next belt change interval.
i could show you perfectly destroyed engines where the owner's cheaped the job out [this engine in particular is very expensive to repair, if these items are ignored. good luck and continued life for your volvo

Do a visual inspection look for cracks and small tears then check your manual 60 to 70K miles is about right. Have it changed if it brakes when you are driving it is going to cost a **** load to have your engine repaired and you will be stranded to boot.
