It' just part of the breed characteristic. They all do it. They dig like moles, run like the wind, swim like a little beaver....... They are loving to their family. It is just the way they are. They are braver than any solider and more dexterous than any athlete. It's just the breed.

i have a weiner dog and he likes to bark alot. he barks for no reason he will be in a sound sleep and then jump up and start barking at the wall or something. he always barks at everything, every person that he sees that he doesnt reconize. he barks at the cat, he barks at his food, he arks at his toys, he barks at the tv, he barks at the grass, HE BARKS AT EVERYTHING. i always thought it was because he was half retard. but i was doing research and its just the way weiner dogs are. they bark.

Jess nailed it. This breed was developed to spend a lot of time underground...the only way to tell where they were and what they were doing was to listen for their bark.
They are also very alert and concerned about what's going on around them, similar to a terrier (which is, really, what they are)...which is why they make excellent watch dogs.

That's what they were bred for. Their purpose was to follow prey down its burrow (badgers, originally) and bark so the hunter can locate where it cornered the animal. It has to be a sharp, piercing bark to be heard above ground, doesn't it? Any hunting dog has to be loud and consistent (ever heard a beagle on the hunt?) and dachshunds are excellent noise makers.

A lot of small dogs are yappy. I guess it is to make them feel more important around other bigger dogs.

that's funny, I noticed that too! Sometimes it sounds like they're barking in morse code. No idea why though.

usually lack of consistantcy in their training... they're confused and seeking attention. even being yelled at (negative attention) is better to them than no attention at all.
