when it is clear their faith and teachings are not universal? They are scattered and a more or less smorgasbord of beliefs. Doesn't that discount the catholic moniker? To me there is only one real Catholic Church and it does include the Churches that claim allegiance to the Bishop of Rome..

Isn't it funny that nearly all protestants universally agree that the Catholic Church is wrong, yet they accuse each other of the same thing, while each claims to have the correct, true teachings of Christ?

The Roman Catholic Church can trace the origins back to Christ (our first Pope was Peter) and we were the original Christian church (the rest of the denominations split because they didn't want to adhere to the rules Christ set forth) we think we can call ourselves whatever we wish.

Well, then your claim for the word catholic also fails to include the members of largest denomination in Christendom.
The term in lower case means universal. When you capitalize it, however, it becomes a proper name. The House of Representatives is not really a house, in the way we normally use the term, but when capitalized, referring to the House (in proper context) makes it clear we're referring to a legislative body, not a bungalow.

Do you mean the Universalist Church? They don't exist as a distinct entity anymore...The origin of their name was they believed all were universally saved, sinners included.
If that's not what you mean than I don't understand the question.

Why do you care? At one time it was the Universal Church, but then some members of it split off. I think that it can call itself whatever the heck it wants to.
