basically, i was valedictorian of a good sized high school class, and took pride in my ability to learn easily and impress instructors. well, i feel that ive hit a wall. this past year, i suddenly lost my ability to concentrate...i think. im having trouble telling if its a concentration thing or if i simply cant digest information. i feel as though ive become very disorganized and cant remember things. my mind goes blank out of nowhere and i lose track of my thoughts. i cant get into projects because things simply seem more difficult. i am being treated with depression and anxiety as a result of this, but am not diagnosed with anything and am not really certain that this is the problem. my doctor doesnt seem very certain either, and everything is very trial-and-error. i was just wondering if there might be other possible causes of this new retardation of my academic abilities.

I am not a physician or a psychologist. However, I have some personal experience with the phenomenon that you describe. I like to call it 'brain fog." For more than 4 years I suffered from brain fog, anxiety and depression. My GYN finally did a thyroid test, and found that I was severely hypothyroid.

Taking care of the thyroid issue cleared up the brain fog, the depression and the anxiety. I went back to college and graduated SummaCum Laude.

Ask for a full work up...there's probably something physiological going on. People do not become less intelligent with age.

You need to get 8 hrs of sleep on a regular basis. The brain while you sleep clears out bad memory links. Since you're in college, you're probably trying to survive on 5 - 6 hours of sleep.

First years of college are suppose to be the hardest. So stop being a wimp about it. You're not going to be perfect in every class. College is supposed to be more difficult than high school. Just do your best to get through the years where schools try and weed out people who don't belong in college.

Call it DISTRESS, not ordinary Stress which my Doctor wrote on the Doctor's certificate.

I think it with me it is not so much striving for perfection, but I have to maintain a certain standard then it all becomes too much for me.

The workload sorta demands cutting corners, doing things in a rush. I've got as bad as I ever have had right now.
