A common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door because they feel it is their duty to "recruit" a householder, or get him to "convert". In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!
That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.
(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.
Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:
(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

What I love about being in the "truth or the way", there is no repremanding for giving freely of your time and showing love. That is pretty much other religions and people that don't claim to believe in a God. Even Yahoo Answers are a pleasure for us. Why? We want to share what we have learned from the scriptures. This is why, not matter what age, background, male or female, rich or poor, we all speak the same mind. Yes, we are very different but when it comes to our faith, it is completely unified. We could meet someone all the way across the world and if we know they are a Jehovah's Witness, we are instantly good friends. Who can say that? I do like going door to door. I love people.

We do this because this is what we are told to do.
“As you go, preach.”—Matt. 10:7
“Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations . . . teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19, 20)
In his prophecy about events to take place at “the conclusion of the system of things,” Jesus said: “And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:3, 14) Or, as stated at Mark 13:10: “Also, in all the nations the good news has to be preached first.”—See also Revelation 14:6, 7.
Who, today, should share in the preaching work? Evidently, Christendom feels it is not an obligation for everyone, and it is true that when Jesus said that the good news would be preached, he did not specify who would do the work. Whom else, though, would Jehovah use for such a work but those who have put faith in his Word and begun to apply it in their lives? When Jehovah determined in the days of Noah to warn the wicked world of mankind of a coming destruction, he used a man who “walked with the true God.” (Genesis 6:9, 13, 14; 2 Peter 2:5) When he wanted prophetic messages delivered to Israel, he sent ‘his servants, the prophets.’ (Jeremiah 7:25; Amos 3:7, 8) The dedicated nation of Israel was a nation of his witnesses. (Exodus 19:5, 6; Isaiah 43:10-12) Yes, Jehovah uses his dedicated servants as his witnesses.
Some have said that the command to make disciples, given at Matthew 28:19, 20, was given only to the apostles and therefore does not apply to Christians in general. But notice what Jesus said: “Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations . . . teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you.” Jesus’ followers were to teach new disciples to observe all the things Jesus commanded. And one of the things he commanded was to ‘go and make disciples.’ Surely, all new disciples would have to be taught to observe this particular command too.
Jesus preached directly to the people. We read, for example, that he preached in the synagogues. Why? Because people assembled there on the Sabbath and listened to a reading and discussion of the Scriptures. (Matthew 4:23; Luke 4:15-21) Jesus also preached to people along the wayside, beside the sea, on a mountain slope, at a well outside a city, and in homes. Wherever there were people, Jesus preached to them.—Matthew 5:1, 2; Mark 1:29-34; 2:1-4, 13; 3:19; 4:1, 2; Luke 5:1-3; 9:57-60; John 4:4-26.
This is why we preach.

As disciples of Jesus Christ,we obey his command found at Mat.28:19,20 where he instructed his disciples to "Go therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations..........teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you....."
Jesus himself did a similar work;preaching to people about his heavenly Father Jehovah and God's kingdom.
Acts.5:42:"And every day in the temple, and from house to house, they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ Jesus"
Acts.20:20"........While I did not hold back from telling you any of the things that are profitable nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house."
Mat.24:14:"This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabied earth for a witness to all the nations and then the end will come."
I used to be a catholic and am so grateful to Jehovah God for the preaching work.Without someone preaching to me I would never have known about my wonderful God,Jehovah, nor would I ever had come to an accurate understanding of His Holy Word, the Bible.
We go door to door, because we are commanded to and we are also helping fulfill Bible prophecy.
You said "if you are happy with your religion then just practice it".That is all very well. But have you ever stopped to think if what you are practicing is acceptable to God?
We are not trying to 'recruit' people. We have an obligation to our fellow man to give them an opportunity to come to know God and what his will for mankind is.To give people an opportunity for everlasting life before the end of this wicked system comes.- John17:3:"This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you,the only true God,and of the one whom you sent forth,Jesus Christ."

It's not about recruiting but about sharing positive things with people. Sometimes it's nice to hear about good news for the future instead of all the bad new all the time. It should be a positive experience to have a discussion with a Jehovah's Witness. I'm sorry it wasn't for you. :(

It isnt recruiting people. You would be amazed HOW MANY people have no religious background. No religious understanding. We go because Jesus said go and preach the good news to all nations. We are in every country and preaching to everyone. Take it or leave it but we will try. To me if you are happy and truely believe then wouldnt you want other people to have the same happiness? Do you not tell people about God? Yes a lot of people ask us to come back to do a Bible study, some do not and ask us not to come back. Simple as that. Wheather you want to continue with us is your decision at least we tried.

Wow, a question about Jehovah Witnesses instead!
Well, I actually know a few and they are very nice
people. They know not to preach to me and I do
not preach to them. They go door to door because
they said they are told to do this.
If you don't want to talk to them, don't answer the door
and if they leave a pamphlet, throw it away if you want.
They don't celebrate Birthdays or Holidays but they give
each other gifts at other times.
Have a good day!

I think because as part of their religion and most others as well we are well suppose to spread the Word and no noone converts on the spot nor do they, at least any I have had in for tea expect you to. They do however, expect you to act with the graciousness and courtesy that you've been taught.

Sounds like you are accusing Jesus and his disciples of being in a cult, not a very christian thing to do.
Luk 9:60 Jesus said unto him, go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
Act 20:20 [And] how I kept back nothing that was profitable [unto you], but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
