Now adays all car rental places do not allow smoking in the cars and will charge you extra if the car comes back smelling like it.

1) hard to get rid of the smell completely without alot of Febreeze or proffessional cleaning.

2) cig burns in the seats and floorboards make the car less attractive and sooner or later requires replacing of the interior or seat covers.

3) since America is trying to do away with smoking for health, car rental companies are following diners and most restaurants.

Most of them do, some cars are held specifically for those who request "non-smoking" vehicles. You would just have to call and ask around. But I would phrase your question something like this "Are all of your rental cars non-smoking or is it a mix of both smoking and non?" Some places may charge a "deposit" for smokers if you come right out and say that you are a smoker, the "deposit" would be for any damages such as a heavy smell, burn holes in seats, etc.

Personally, I keep an even mix of smoking and non-smoking cars. Everyone is given a smoking car by default unless they specifically ask for one that is non-smoking.

I also use my "smoking" cars for those who have pets that will be riding, and save the "non-smoking" cars for those that do not.

This might not be the best advice but my husband and I smoke in our rentals (not a whole lot, but if we really feel the urge). We roll the windows all the way down and be sure to return it not smelling of smoke. We haven't had any problems.

None of them do. In some places, in fact, it is illegal for them to do it.
