I don't think it is primitive - sophisticated and advanced people still use the word "gal"

I think its just a matter of what you are used to, where you grew up. etc. etc...

My friend uses the word gal and she is 27, and my mom and grandmother use the word gal and they are 53 and 77 respectively.

People still say plenty of things that aren't popular anymore, and I don't think that "old people" need to "learn" not to say it.

Have you ever heard the saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks"? They are never going to stop. It is a part of their common vernacular speech. Just like younger people have certain ways of speaking, so do older people. It isn't any more primitive than using any of the slang terms popular today.

I don't think it is an old people thing. Different terms are popular in different parts of the country. So as you go from state to state you may or may not here the term gal!!

Some day you'll be old and I bet you'll still be using words and phrases that are outdated. Would you really want your grandmother talking like a 16 year old? That would be ridiculous!

Unfortuately, most cultures tend to infantalise women. They should be taught not to use language that is disrespectful to grown women, just as they have had to learn to stop calling black people ni**ers.

To the oldsters ...any female under 50 is a gal.

Enjoy it. I try to not look my age ever since a kid referred to me as 'Mister'.
