Is he gagging or drooling? A lot of things can make a cat sound different. They may have scratched the back of their throat eating something that was sharp, they may have a mouth ulcer (raw spot) and be in pain, they may have a broken molar or infection. They may have a reaction to food they're allergic to, or a growth near the vocal cords or a sore throat that makes it painful to swallow.....it could be anything and a vet would need to look into the mouth and throat to see. But if he's not drooling, gagging, or gasping, he can wait till the vets opens in the morning. Keep him quiet. Watch to see if he can eat or drink. See if his back fur is standing up spiky instead of laying smooth. A spiky fur back usually means the cat doesn't feel good at all.

Calm your younger one down, even if you have to put him behind a closed door or in a carrier. If you have catnip, let him have some and give him enough time of the sedative effects to kick in (unless he's one that turns into a mean drunk, then don't try that). The behavior of the other cat is triggering a reaction in him because things are different suddenly, and that puts a lot of cats on edge.
