I have a r reg, twin cam, nissan almera SRI 1.6 16Valve. I bought it second hand a couple of months ago, but recently I have had a few problems with it. Whenever I stop (i.e. at a junction) the engine cuts out. It's starts back up straight away but , It's not stalling, it's just cutting out on me. Today, the revometer was going crazy, holding at 8000 revs and then the needle started going everywhere although the revs weren't.

is there anybody out there who knows what this could be at all please. xxx

sounds like mass air flow fault. wont be cam and crank sensors as above as your model doesnt have them. nissan dealer or auto electrician should have hand held fault code reader which would list fault stored on cars computer. only about £30 for a diagnostic check at the most

You need a camshaft posistion sensor. Distributor it used to be called. If you remove the distributor cap and rotor then the black plastic piece under the rotor you will see oil. leaking into the photo optic pick up. You can rinse the oil out with brake cleaner spray and compressed air. the rubber seal on the cap throw it away because it won't fit. That way there is a path for the oil to run out onto your transmission. This non repair is good for a couple of years.... Or you can replace the didtributor for about $400 US
