The Earth is just going through it's natural cycle, if it kills off humans, then so be it. But it will take more than 50 years. But given the way people can adapt to differences, there is a good chance we will survive this and come out stronger.

Check the average climate temps for the Holocene period [the time we are in], the 10,500 yrs since the last Ice Age. There was a drastic warming at the beginning that lasted 7,500 yrs, then a cooling and another warming about the time the Vikings were growing wheat in Greenland c. 1000, then another big cooling in medieval times and then there has been a steady warming. Explain the cause for all three warming periods, none of which were influenced by Man and industry.
Some say that the causes for warming that were there before do not exist now, that it is now all due to our CO2, so if they are right, if not for our CO2 production we would be in another Ice Age. If true, then the political Left will cut back on CO2 emissions and bring on an Ice Age which would be even more disastrous than a little warming. If we are simply in a natural warming trend, to which we contribute an infinitesimal amount, there is nothing we can do to fight nature. If the Left is right and there are no natural forces warming the Earth, then they will cause the opposite kind of disaster, Global Freezing.
I still go for nature, with a tiny influence from Man. Besides, orange groves in Cornwall would not be a bad thing. Man can adapt to many climates and locations, from deserts below sea level to high mountains and extreme cold. We could even adapt to live in Lunar colonies or on space stations, even to living on other planets, because we can build our own environment. Man could adapt to the conditions of early Earth too. We can survive Climate Change, it's each other we have to worry about.

I agree that we are in a state of flux with global warming but i believe that it is caused (mostly) because its time for the earth to go through a climate change. Its done it before and it will do it again. And what ever you believe spiritually or academically being at the top of the food chain doesn't mean that we are immune from extinction. Ex. the Dinosaurs. Everything comes and goes through this world in its time. It is mans arrogance to think that we are above it and have the means to control extinction of any species even our own. We may be able to extend life for a while but in the end control is an illusion.

Your point is well taken.
If we had never done anything, we would likely still have a problem.
Climate change is a reality and is cyclical, but is NOT always the same identical cycle.
It may well be the Earth could change into a planet that is uninhabitable by man. Hopefully they time will be FAR in the future.
Carbon dioxide DOES aggravate a warming trend. Its exact influence is debatable. Replacing fossil fuels with other energy sources just makes good sense but PLEASE don't ask the government to stick their hand in the project. They foul up everything they touch!
Private enterprise will eventually work out the technology, provide an economic boost and jobs. The government CAN'T provide anything but taxes and regulations.
The Kyoto Accord omits Chins and India from their program. China NOW has the world's largest carbon footprint.
Political action is ALWAYS misdirected.

The light dawns! Humans are so self-centred that they can't cope with the fact that the Earth won't ALWAYS be a comfortable place for us to live. The Earth IS changing and 'evolving' continuously, and we happen to be living in a time when it's not so stable, but we have to blame it on us and on CO2, because there's some kinda twisted comfort in believing that. The best thing we can do is ADAPT.

Yes the climate on earth does and has changed over the last hundreds of millions of years, indeed there have been times on earth where humans as we are now could not have survived due to the proportions of gases in the atmosphere being quite different than they are now.
Global warming climate change is instigated by industrial human activity by amongst other things the billions of tons of carbon dioxide we have artificially released back into the atmosphere in the last hundred years or so and is therefore a completely different thing than slowly evolving natural changes.

As a geologist, I am quite familiar with the principle the change is the norm. Sea levels and climates never stay the same for very long. As climates change, habitats migrate inland or toward the sea, to higher and lower elevations, and north and south. For those that pretend things are stable and it is only the result of humans that things are now changing are deluding themselves and revealing an ignorance of basic science.

You ARE quick, Ms Qwikbrownfox.
It's hard to imagine that as gifted a species we are in terms of intellect, that we don't quite get that fighting nature is not the way to survive. Those animals that adapted to the changes nature spat out are the ones truly smart enough to survive.
Sounds like you're one of the smart ones.
And the smart ones realize that they can also spoil their niche enough to threaten their survival.
But the planet will go on without those who fail to adapt...

it is nice to know other people think in a similar way to how i view the global warming process. i too think the problems we are experiencing are due to normal evolutionary process .We cannot change this phenomena, but it doesn't hurt to try to understand the impact we do have on our earth during our lifetime. Perhaps trying to influence environmental change helps to alleviate some of the fear of extinction.
