My doctor has prescribed me 50,000 IU of Vit D, this seems like an awful lot, is this normal?

The prescribed dose is not awful. For severe Vitamin defeciency a high dosage up to 50,000 IU or even more are prescribed depending on your condition. For example: an adult with a Vit. D malabsorption could be given a dose of 300,000 IU, those who have VIT D-DEPENDENT RICKETS can have 60,000 IU. Please note that Vit. D has a very important role in Calcium absorption too, thus both situations would be requiring Vit. D supplementation.

You may be wondering why that much as the dosage has many number figures. Well, take note that the dose is in International Units (IU) and you need 40 IU to have 1 microgram (mcg). If you will convert the 50,000 IU to micrograms it will amount to 1,250 mcg. That will be actually equivalent to 1.25 milligrams.

Do you still think that is too much? Was it Ergocalciferol that was prescribed ?

Vitamin D regulates the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body.A lack of this vitamin can cause rickets or osteomalacia. You do not give any clinical details-age/sex/symptoms or why this is being prescribed for you.Your doctor has your medical record and results of investigations and the rationale for using Vit. D and the type of it that he is using. up to 50,000 IU is a recommended dose..The logical person to discuss this is your doctor because of what I have already said. Trust him
