Our Schnauzer who is 13yrs old, recently cannot control her bowels. She doesn't even try to let us know that she has to go anymore.
I know a lot of dogs when they get into the senior years that they may have this problem.
It happens about three times a month, and I always wake up to a mess, usually dark watery brown.
We take her out often, even if we should get up in the middle of the night to go ourselves, and yet I still wake up to her mess.
I don't know if this is a serious probably which requires me to call a vet or not. I can not leave her outside. She is only 14lbs.
I also can not crate her. She is too old for that method. I have not changed her food, though I do add white rice occasionally when she has her accidents. Seems to bind her.
Any suggestions?

It's a sad fact of life but your dog is incontinent and will not be able to control her bowel movements I'm afraid.

Have a word with your Vet. I'm sure there is something he can give her to help her with this problem. She is an old lady now and, unfortunately, these things do come with old age.

My 13 y.o. Springer had exactly the same problem and I dealt with it for over a year before I saw a Vet about it. He told me there really wasn't a cure for it so you either have to carry on as you are doing now or think of having her put to sleep. This is the most difficult decision any pet owner will ever have to make but sometimes it is better for the dog. She can't be very happy with her situation, especially if she has been fastidious all her life. The decision was taken away from us because the Vet discovered that our old lady had a tumour on further examination and we had to say goodbye to her a few weeks ago just after her 14th birthday. It was a very sad day for the family but I couldn't let her suffer any more.

It really makes me mad when you have a problem and people assume your just wanting to kill your dog or your being mean and hateful to it, your supposed to comment when it helps not always judge people when you don't even know the situation,or haven't lived it.. if someone didn't care they wouldn't be reaching out, I am also dealing with this in a 10 year old lab, whether he has diarrhea or not he poops on the floor if excited or just walking down stairs, or startled, and its been every day, sometimes twice a day, hes very gimpy and feeble and I guess he holds it till he cant hold it anymore, he'll go inside after hes been outside for a while, I think its just the movement that stimulates it, i have a hard decision to make, hes old beyond his years because of bad breeding and the old farmer I got him from dew clawing him with a pocket knife, his joints are very bad, if someone has a real solution besides lots of meds from the vet that cost a fortune and have worse side effects, so that hes not suffering more from that I'd love to hear it, thanks all

You will have to take the dog to the vet and have a check up. Seeing how it is 13 years old it just might be a older dog issue and can't control it's bowels. That could also mean cancer so your best bet is to have a check up with the vet.

13 year old dog, and it's only 3 times a month?? Count yourself lucky.. You still have her and 3 times a month out of 30 days, that's not a whole lot in the big scheme of things.. She's old.. give her a break. Don't be mean or hateful towards her, she probably can't help it. One day she'll be gone and you'll wish she was still there pooping in the house 3 times a month!

have you tried pepto bismol?? when my lab mix had this problem i called the vet and he said it was ok to give this to mine, you have to use according to the dogs weight! my dog weigher 52 pounds, and i gave him 2tsp.
mind you they DO NOT like the taste og it! so hold the mouth closed, until he swollows it! or he will shake his head and get it all over, what a mess!., but it worked. good luck.

It IS serious enought to consult a vet. There might be a medical reason that can be treated, but if not then he/she can advise you on techniques to try.

Please call your vet and discuss this with them. They should be able to tell you if this is something that can be treated and how you should go about it.

Good Luck!
