If you join the military, any branch, no matter what job you do you can be deployed into a combat position. That is the whole idea behind the military. While clerical jobs such as records and finance may seem a safe bet to stay safe in an office, it isn't true. Every job has a war-time/deployment application. So whatever you do, you would be doing it if you are deployed. To want the benefits of the military without be willing to take the risks is ridiculous ...you have no business enlisting.

You didn't mention whether or not you were in the Army or just working for them as a civilian. I will assume you are in the army. One thing recruiters fail to mention and many soldiers fail to realize is that EVERYONE in the Army has a 2nd MOS--Infantry. So there is no job that precludes you from deployment. However, clerical MOSs probably have a greater potential of remaining in the rear with the gear than other MOSs. If you haven't joined yet, why not go Air Force? They don't fight front line, they send their officers out. Either way, best of luck.

If you're not willing to go to the field/deploy, you probably shouldn't join.

The Army is not a welfare program.

IF you *were* to join as a clerk, you would very likely deploy to support those soldiers who are fighting. You would be responsible for making sure their paperwork was correct and their pay was correct. That is too important to have someone doing it just for their own benefits.

The Army is a good place that are willing to put the needs of the nation and fellow soldiers ahead of their own personal desires. One of the Army Values is "Selfless Service." It doesn't sound like you have that value.

You don't care where you go? Ok, In that case, let me answer it this way: Your chances of going to Iraq or Afghanistan are high. If you go there as a 71L or other 'clerk' position, you will not be a 'front line' soldier (and women aren't in combat MOS's anyway) but there is still a chance that you will be involved in a firefight. This war does not have 'frontlines' and you could, even if less likely, come under fire. Your job would be very important. If those combat soldiers pay or paperwork is screwed up, they're going to be upset. You may or may not be to blame but you're the one they're going to come to to straighten it up and if you don't get it fixed quick, then it will be your fault.

Am I being nice? Sorry, that's not my job. I'm here to tell it like it is. And in this line of work, that is how it is. The truth must be told, even if it's not what the person wants to hear. I hope you can appreciate that.

It's hard to say. If you're in a clerical position and deployed, you'll be doing clerical work on the deployment. Now that may not always be the case, you may still need to travel from one area to the other. I can't say anything for sure.

Don't worry, you'll be trained and you'll have plenty of support. You won't be there alone.

Yes you do have a chance of deploying since every unit has an orderly room which takes care of most the paperwork for the unit. The only way you will not deploy is if you go to a strategic unit (a unit that stays in its place).

thought you may want to know that Administrative Specialist ( 42 L) and Human Resources Specialist ( 42A) are one mos now.. 42A ( They merged them) .. Yes you may be in the office or where needed , and Yes you will be deployed ...
I hate to share this but no MOS is safe from being deployed.
If there were I know too many people who would change their MOS.

Good luck!

The needs of the Army come first. They can do anything they want with you once you sign the paper.
