I don't recommend the fabric, but pictures would work well. Basically try to make the walls not look so bare. Then a few decorative rugs on the floor can help. I like a vase in the room with something like a decorative straw put in it to set on the bathroom sink. It adds a decorative flare and you don't have to worry about it dying like a plant. And it doesn't look fake like a fake plant. Nice towels and a good shower curtain help. Then a nice soap dispenser helps. Even the hooks for the shower curtain can make the bathroom look a lot different.

One suggestion is that whatever the wall color is, use contrasting colors for the pictures on the walls and for the bathroom curtain. This will help them stand out and make the bathroom look nice. So if the wall is a light color, use dark color paintings or pictures and a dark colored shower curtain. If the wall is dark colored use light colored pictures and a light colored shower curtain. Same goes with the floor and rugs. Use a color for the rugs that contrasts with the floor. Or if it doesn't contrast with the floor at least have it contrast with the wall.

One thing you can never go wrong with is black and white pictures. They tend to go well anywhere.

Candles also tend to work well in a bathroom. Just make sure the placement is right.

And shelves or a bathroom tower if you have room will help if you have the room. Don't put them in if there isn't the room. You want the room to look clean and orderly, not crowded and cluttered.

You can do plenty without painting the walls. First, find a shower curtain that he likes. I would suggest a plastic liner and then a fabric curtain hung over it. Pull colors out of the shower curtain for rugs, towels, trash can, knick knacks. Find nice pictures to hang on the wall. You can make it look great. I had an apt. that I could do nothing in. I found a cute shower curtain and accesories and it looked great. Try HGTV.com for more ideas.
