It's your business what you do. If people are that nosy and rude, tell them to take a walk. They're NOT your friends. You don't need to please people who have nothing better to do than worry about what YOU do for a living.
Now if you feel guilty about what you're doing and feel you should be doing something else, that's a different story, but I don't sense that in your message.

In the grand scheme of things, it's only because people don't understand it. Most people need repetition to feel safe. You apparently don't, and that's not a bad thing at all. It's just not the norm. I can totally see why you'd love doing it.
I wish there was an easy answer to tell you that would make you not feel self conscious. There's not, other than the usual "just don't care what other people think. It's your life. You like doing it. Just live in bliss knowing that people don't get it, and you do!" :)
And thank goodness for people like you. I've needed temps numerous times over the years, and they have been some of the best people I've worked with!

It's pretty rare that people are happy with their jobs! Good for you, sticking with what you love! I know some companies they support you with Benefits when you temp, I hope your at least getting that! It's hard sometimes, when someone belittles you and makes you feel like your not good enough. You seem to be a strong person who can accept change and isn't afraid of adventure! Life is to short to be stuck in one place for a long period of time, sometimes! I would just tell people you work for whatever the name of the temp agency is, and your title could be 'free lance specialist.' If they ask you what you do specifically, you can tell them you help out different companies with projects and fulfilling tasks, or something like that. Best wishes!

I tempted for a long time and loved it, the main problem I had was that I was on more money than the staff employed full-time, which caused a few problems. But then who cares I loved the constant changes and not being in the same place and doing the same work day in day out. At the time it suited me. You don't need to feel ashamed for anything. As for the questions tell them the truth. Dont change what you do just for other peoples satisfaction, at the end of the day you don't work with them for very long

I think the fact that you're feeling insecure about it means that maybe you feel like you should be doing something else with your life. HOWEVER, if you are completely certain that you are happy temping forever, you should just decide that it's the best thing for you, and that attitude will be reflected in your responses to judgmental people. For instance, when they, "Having a hard time finding a permanent job?" Just say, "To be honest, I like temping because I never have to stay in one place for a long time, and I get to meet new people all the time."

First of all don't be ashamed of temping - that is how I started out working and it is a need that has to be filled. More importantly you love what you do. I can't believe someone would be so rude as to ask if you can get a "real job" - who terrible. If someone asks about your job, just tell them that you love working at different companies and with different people. You probably get a great benefit from "trying out" all different industries and various types of companies. I bet you are never bored! lol

Who cares what people say or think? I'm a temp myself (among many things) and I relish in my ability to pursue my dreams, goals, and passions. Temping gives you total control over your time.
These people who make fun of you for being a temp are tied down to the same job day and day out year after year. Yeah, maybe they make a little more money and have a little more stability, but you have the freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want. People might say nasty things or make fun of you, but it's only because they're envious that you lead your own life on your own terms, beholden to nobody but yourself and your loved ones. Meanwhile they have to schedule their life around their job.
If someone asks you you "why do you temp?" tell them the truth! Tell them it is a proper job, you make more than enough to get by, and you control your life.

i temped for about 8 years. i miss a lot of aspects of it. there are some things i dont miss - and one of them is the stigma of temping. you often get treated like crap at job sites by the regular ees. and then there is always the possability of getting handed a pink slip because the job is done - without any notice.
what i do miss is the exposure to different companies. i miss the people - you meet friends when you temp for the same agency and run into them at different jobs.
if you feel really insecure about it - jsut say that you are a consultant for a firm that outsources you to local companies for administrative work (or whatever you specialize in).

Do what you love to do. Thats all you need to worry about. I used to be a temp too. Personally I wanted security with a company thats why I left. But I agree that you meet new people and are in different places often. Don't let anyone get you down. It's your life. Live it how YOU want to.

Just tell them you like the diversity of both the job and people. You like to meet new people and the change in jobs adds a challange. It's give you a chance to grow professionally because you are always doing different jobs and duties.
Most people would like something more stable and that's why they view temping as "improper". But if you enjoy it, who is anybody else to say. Do what you enjoy that's what important.

You have reasons why you like temping. You just told us a few. Tell those people the same thing. We all have different goals in life and how we go about to attain them. So your career path is not traditional, there still is nothing wrong with what you are doing if you truely enjoy it. Keep your head up kiddo.
