Save your things on a CD, flash, or floppy for now. Call the place you got your computer if it is new. If not call a computer repair in your area and ask them what you could do to fix if yourself or if you would have to bring it in.

I have never heard of this. Are you sure you are saving these files?

What sort of files and where to you save them? Have you proven to yourself they are saved before shut down? If so, did you look in the same place after restart?

I feel you either did not save it OR you saved it somewhere other than where you are looking.

Where is it being saved?
At school they tell us to never save anything in the C Drive, Only the D Drive.

Try it. It might jst work. :)
