It is possible only if you select "Word 97-2000" or something similar in the "Save as type" in the "Save" dialog box in ms-word (hope this helps :) )

Not if you save it as a Word 2007 file. You must save it as a Word 2000 to be opened by Word 2000 or Word 2003.
In some future update of the Word software Microsoft may add the retrofit readability capability but it really depends upon whether this is feasible and practical.
