Hey guys I have a problem..
My brother started smoking weed when he was in high school & later (I guess) started to experiment with shrooms. He had an overdose 2 yrs. ago & ended up in the phsyciatric ward 2x.
He is now diagnosed with schizophrenia and is on meds for this condition. He is 23 & stays in his room all day, does not socialize with anyone & stays on the computer all day!
He is on treatement but he only sees a pshychiatrist once a month and it seems like its not enough.
My question is have any of u had this problem or know anyone that has had this problem? What can I do to help him since talking does not help. what caused this or did he have this problem before the drugs? We were not raised together so I don't know if this was a pre-existing problem...PLEASE HELP!

Schizophrenia usually manifests itself when people are in their teens or early twenties. His drug use most likely had nothing to do with this; he could have noticed some problems and used drugs in an attempt to self-medicate. Schizophrenia usually has some genetic origins, which does not mean that you will acquire this disease!
The best thing you can do for him is to help make sure he is taking his medicine. The schizophrenics that I have worked with are often able to lead relatively normal lives when they are on their medication. The problem is that they often quit taking their medication once they start to feel better, which causes them to revert back to their previous behavior patterns.
It could be the type of schizophrenia he has that is making him anti-social. Being in his room at his computer could be the place where he is most comfortable and feels the safest.
I have added a link that goes into more detail on the different types of schizophrenia, different drugs prescribed, and different forms of treatment. One of the best things you can do for him is to educate yourself on his condition, so you can use the knowledge to help him get the best medical care and educate family and friends who might have questions.
Good luck. He's lucky to have such a caring sibling.

Polysubstance abuse is very common in schizophrenics. There is no question in the scientific community that this can be a precursor to this diagnosis. It is kind of like "which came first, the chicken or the egg". Some professionals feel that the drug use was the trigger of the illness while others feel that it is genetics and the drug use exacerbated the symptoms. There is not a whole lot you can do for him. Once a month to see a psychiatrist is actually quite normal if he is being treated with medications. His appointment would be to monitor his symptoms and monitor the levels of medication in his blood. If he does not appear to manifest any new problems then his psychiatrist will continue with the present regimine of treatment. Because of the governments "wonderful" Health Information Privacy Act, his doctor is limited with respect to how much conversation he can have with the family without your brother's consent. You may want to alert his therapist about this behavior and your concerns. best wishes

Hey,overdose do not mess up your brain.Just destroys your organs like liver and heart.I think he had those conditions earlier and what he need is to be around people.Tell him computer won't laugh with him and cry with him.Only human being does that.Talk 2 him more even if he doesn't talk back. It'll make him feel less emaciated.Try to bring him for a walk in the park and morning jogs.Play some outdoor games with him like catch or football. It'll make him feel better.

If you guys didn't grow up together.... maybe there is something that happend to him when you guys weren't around, which led him to drugs. Maybe a parents divorce or step parents, (Sorry i don't know your story), And he used drugs to try and cope with it... If you can, let the physichian know if you can, maybe give them a call or somethin and let them know. The problem of him being so "alone" in a sense, probably happened earlier on... Or he really hates therapy and this is his way of venting. Try and encourage him.. tell him he is not a bad person or anything, maybe try and do stuff with him, go bowling, take him in public to show him you aren't ashamed and maybe he'll come out of his shell.
Good Luck!

Lets see . . .
Skitzo means lost in his own little world essentially.
Nice place to visit, but you shouldn't live there.
From the outside - talk to him and get him grounded = help him be real.
From the inside: If he wants to experience like a person is intended to, he will have to open up. And not everyone on the outside is the same, and hiding isn't always the answer. Don't let the bad voice in your head take your soul = your meant to have fun.
On the other hand . . if he is determined to hide away, let him.

Well i prayed for him right when i read this because i was in kinda the same boat. God was the only one who saved me. Keep trying to get him to do something else besides drugs. Show him you honestly care for him and will stick it out with him. It will be a process so don't give up. With Christ all things are possible!!
