Please help me choose! My boyfriend and I would like to spend a few days this summer in the Channel Islands. But which one? We are after picturesque villages and nice scenery. We don't know whether to take the car or not. Any advice?

Fyfe, I couldn't agree more! The Isle of Man is lovely, but I would like to go somewhere I haven't been! :-)

The scenery on both islands is great. Jersey is much bigger and more lively at night. St Helier (Jersey's main town) is very similar to UK towns.

Guernsey is more quiet but the town (St peter Port) is much nicer. There are the islands of Herm and Sark to visit.
Cars are fairly cheap to hire but flights can be expensive.
Cheapest way is Condor Ferries (fast ferry is best)

Take it from an Isle of Wight resident, this county is a ******* **** hole - there's no economy, no jobs, and no future here. The Island is disproportionately retired people, or those nearing retirement, and young people still in education. Immigrants are on the dole for the same reason british nationals are, because we ran out of jobs because the current (capitalist) system let the banks destroy the economy. Don't blame the immigrants, they're not the enemy. Black/White/Asian/Muslim/Gay/Straight, whatever, we're all 'slaves' (to use the term loosely) to the upper class and I pray for the day that the country wakes the **** up and realises this. Stop reading the Daily Mail, The Sun, The Telegraph, or any other paper owned by some company with interests in politics that aren't solely based on how they can maximize profit. Let's see the issue through the eyes of an uneducated non-EU (these cause the most anger) immigrant. You live in a country with a failing economy. You live in a country where the majority of the population is of a religion that is stigmatised by the west. Your quality of life is low: you have little or no access to clean water, basic standards of living (education, health care, safe housing) are not met. You country is likely under threat from NATO forces. You look at a country like Britain with admittedly lax immigration laws: a future for you, your wife, your children. A place where you family may be able to live comfortably. It's worth a shot, any job will do - toilet cleaner, people's carer - anything to help provide your children with a better quality of life. There's also the fact that the UK is abysmal at producing skilled workers due to a media fetish for people discovering a 'dream business' when they can retire at 40 and move to France. We NEED to import immigrant doctors etc because the UK just does not output enough of these. These people are arguably more worthwhile for the country than the businesses. It's arguably the same for Eastern European immigrants - they have the chance to improve their quality of life. Can you honestly say that if you were in any of these positions that you would not do the same? Immigrating is not a light decision - you're leaving behind your family, you friends, your ancestry, heritage. You're abandoning your identity to give yourself the best chance in life. It's late and I have a busy day tomorrow so I'll leave it with this: JUST THINK FOR ONE GOD DAMN SECOND. Think objectively about what you read in the media. The country will crumble if immigrants aren't here, we need these people. Keep your bigotry and islamophobia to yourself, because you tarnish those who understand the important, understated role that immigrants play in keeping the rusted and outdated cogs that this country runs on. Thanks.

Oooh that's hard as I love both. For your first visit you are probably better off with Jersey as there is a bit more to do. We stayed in a place called Greve de Lecq which has a lovely beach but if you stay in St. Helier everywhere is very accessable. I would advise a car but you could fly and hire a car. It used to be quite cheap but it's a few years since I was out there. You should compare prices before you book anything. Once you've been you'll want to go back time and time again.
