One point to mention is that banning things gives them a forbidden aspect, making them more attractive to some people. I think this is one reason prohibition failed so badly. People united in their quiet rebellion against the govornment in speak easy's and such.
I don't agree with banning for the most part. While I do think some things should be banned, like private ownership of ICBM's, banning goes against the idea of America being a free society to a society where no one gets hurt. Saving lives does have to be balanced with quality of life. How important is freedom compared with chaining us so we don't hurt ourselves? What are the positive affects of alchohol on our society? Everything is a double edged sword. Very few things can be described as "evil". To think of something as intrisically evil or bad is child-like thinking, but often used as a propaganda tool.
It may be a fallacy also to think that laws exist purely because they make sense. Like alchohol is a drug so it should be banned like other drugs. The "logic" is usually there to justify actions, not as the primary motivator for the actions. Kind of like the "logic" before the Iraq invasion. I think wether people want it or not has just as much to do with it. Politicians have their popularity to think about when making laws. And shouldn't the govornment be there to serve the people and what they want, not act like the overprotective mother/father, telling them what's good or bad for them? "You can't handle yourself so we need to handle you."
Banning alchohol will cause many people to stop while others will not. Now you've just made criminals out of more people who were not before. And, talk about giving a butt-load of money and new business to organized crime.

Banning it wouldn't do any good. Look at all the deaths each year related to illegal drugs. People will still get it if they want it. Moonshine is illegal (but I think now it is starting to become legal in a couple of states but is high regulated or something like that, I don't know, that's not where I live), but people still find it and drink it. I don't think it's an issue of legality. Rather it's an issue of how our sick society effects kids. Young people (and some never grow out of it) feel a strong sense of importance in fitting in and being popular and desired. Drinking like that is supposed to mean you are "the life of the party", "always fun to be around", etc. This is what these kids want. In fraternity hazing, too, it's done as a means of being accepted into that organization. Our kids need to be taught better. Popularity isn't worth losing your life. People get drunk beyond reason, they get stupid, and bad things happen.

Banning drugs, and alcohol is a drug, has not proven to be much of a deterrent and has in fact caused more harm than can ever be calculated. Millions of people spend time in jail for infractions that are in some way related to drug and alcohol. The money we spend on the jails that house these people could be much better spent in 1,000 different ways.

The only way to get people to use fewer drugs and alcohol is to do a better job of education and to stop their glamorization. For most of us, we are talked into our first time of use by some "friend". Once the hook is set it is quite difficult to stop. Whether it is Hollywood, schools, parents or friends, if we would all change our attitude about acceptance of drugs and alcohol, like the attitude about tobacco has changed, you would see a drop off in useage.

As the French (one of the lowest rates of alcoholism in the world) prove, the answer is to treat something sensibly by exposing kids to the good and bad sides from an early age. Then they don't feel pressurised to use it to 'rebel' and binge drink.

Prohibition did not work in the US, and limited pub hours in the UK used to lead to rush-drinking and lots of accidents/fights at 11.30pm! Restriction just glamourises and mystifies the issue.

No. People like to drink. Advertisers make money. Its an industry and we live in a somewhat laissez-faire economy. So stop trying to control consumers. People who have a problem with drinking should seek help, but the industry should be elliminated or banned.

Even the Bible speaks of over indulging,

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? 30 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.

31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!

32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.

33 Your eyes will see strange sights
and your mind imagine confusing things.

I think it should be banned from advertising, yes, I think so just like cigarettes. That way it's not being glorified for todays youth as being the THE THING TO DO TO HAVE A GOOD TIME. All it does is make you stupid and prone to do stupid things not to mention destroy your body. This I know because my brother is a therapist for an inpatient program for drug and alcohol abuse.

No, the government wouldnt make any more money off the sales of liquor. The superbowl and any other major sporting event would suck since alot of beer companies sponsor the teams and stuff. As for advertising it is only a commercial and some of the commercials are pretty funny. the more you try and take things away the worse the world will be.

Actually, what I think they should do is stop being hipocritical. Either they should ban everything that is harmful (alcohol, smoking, and all kinds of other drugs), or they should allow all of them, but increase the penalty for abusing them.

It kills me that we ban something like using pills for recreational purposes, which can only hurt the irresponsible user, but then we don't ban alcohol, which kills about as many innocent people as it does the abusers of it.

They already tried it. People still drank alcohol, and all it was doing was making people like the gangsters rich bottlegging alcohol for other people, so the US government repealed the ban.

No.

Drinking is a part of our culture, and most cultures for that matter. Banning it would be stripping us of one our most ingrown freedoms. People who drink know what they are getting into. If you choose to drink, do it responsibly or face any potential problems. Its as simple as that.

Isnt it Ironic that the one group that total obstains is the most violent and angry on earth?
