When and How did you wean your toddler off the bottle? My daughter is 15 months old and her doctor thinks its a good time to start weaning her off to a sippy cup. She hates sippy cups and it's hard for me to get her to use one. She'll just turn the cup over, and watch the juice drop out of the top. She'd much rather drink from her bottle. Any suggestions?

There are also sippy cups that are spill proof. Our daughter is breastfed and is off the bottle since she was 8 months old. We had to try different sippy cups that she likes and she took to it.

Maybe try to take your daughter to the store to look at sippies and have her pick some out. She is older so she may like the cups with the straw- and they come in really cool colors.

Good luck!

I weaned my toddler when he was thirteen months old, it took months though I would give him more liquid in a cup every week and less by bottle. I also never gave him anything but milk in a bottle, if he wanted juice with his meals I only provided the cup. If you only provide the cup and she gets thirsty enough she will learn to drink from it, I know this sounds cruel but it's a lot better than dealing with the attachment that your daughter will get from the bottle if you keep offering it. Don't let her have control of the cup at first, you provide her with her drink during the meal times. Just hold up her cup and say do you want a drink, if she refuses then put the cup somewhere out of reach. Eventually, she will get the idea. Another good idea and hard one, don't give her anymore bottles. I threw away all of my bottle nipples so that I wouldn't be tempted to give it back. Again this sounds mean and she will get upset and cry, but it will be well worth it. Good Luck!

Try getting her a Nuby. You can find them at Walmart. They are sippy cups but they have a soft tip instead of a hard tip. I had trouble weaning my daughter off the bottle because she didnt like the sippy cup tips being plastic and hard. She loves the Nuby's and they are no spill. I also got her cups with straws and she loves those too since she sees mommy drinking out of straws. She is 2 now and totally off the bottle...Nuby's really help to make it an easy transition, then when she is used to that you can try other styles of sippy cups. Good luck!

I started using those Nuby cups first, they have a soft "nipple" but they are a sippy. My daughter took to them almost right away. Then I started using ones with a harder spout, until I was using the straw cups. Just try gradual transitions, being that she's only 15 months, you still have time. I would say though that she should be off the bottle soon, before it interferes with the growth of her teeth.

Straw cups are even better than sippy cups, why not just skip sippy cups entirely? Those soft nuby sippy cups aren't any better for your child's teeth than the bottle, avoid them.

Take your child with you and let her pick out her new cups. My youngest is into princesses, so she was excited to switch from boring bottles to princess cups. Look around, here in the US you can find plastic straw cups with a variety of popular designs, such as Dora, Sesame Street, and Spongebob. I'm sure you can find cups in her favorite design.

Make it a positive experience, say "your a big girl now, time to get rid of the bottle" have her help you throw all of them away (and throw ALL of them out) and then take her to the store and let her pick out the type of sippy cup she wants. Then go from there, do not give her any more bottles from that point on, even if she throws a fit if she gets thirsty she will use the sippy cup.

@ walmart or any other store probably, they have sippy cups with handles "that adjust"so that the child can adjust how they want to hold it, like a bottle type hold or what not, also these handles come off, so that they are just a cup, with a spout, the best part about them are the rubber tips that the child drinks out of,they arent hard, and it is more inviting for the child...Worked wonders for me and my fiance. his daughter was older unfortunately...you could try and put her fav drink in the cup in front of her, and just set it there saying that its a treat for her or something. this often works.... THEY ARE LEAK PROOF.

Have you tried Nuby sippy cups? Those kind of cuppy's are easier to get them on and spill proof. Because the nipple on them is kind of like a bottle. My daughter was the same way and I tried them and she hasn't had a bottle since.

No sippy cups. Use the cups with the straw, they are also no spill.Sippy cups screw with oral development just as much as bottles.

I would let her pick out a really cool straw cup (they have some that light up) and let her give her bottles to babies who need them.

they say a year. My son used his bottle until he was 2, He wouldn't use a cup until he was over a year old....it was a comfort thing for him because he was breast fed and I had to quickly wean him when I went on medications for my thyroid suddenly. he is 3 now. His teeth are fine and he is a super smart kid. All of a sudden one day she won't want the bottle anymore. I wouldnt worry about it too too much, they are only babies for such a short time. 5 years from now doctors and the books will be saying something different.

I answered this question the other day for someone else.
