The purpose of fasting is to bring you closer to God by putting something important to you second behind God. This could be anything you like. I'm diabetic and cannot go long periods of time without eating. But I can give up something else that's important like TV or sports; anything that I do regularly and need prayer to help me make it through my predetermined fasting period (which is the whole point.) If I can't go a day without turning on the TV, maybe I should fast from it for a week, etc. Fasting from eating is good because your life depends on food. But we THINK there are other things in life that our life depends on. But that's OK because if we take something we love to do and don't do it for God, that's fasting. Doing nothing but pray and study is very good but working or doing anything else is OK, too. For example, if you fast from eating while you are working, you are making it harder to not eat because your body needs energy. The main thing is to fast from something that you need to pray about (and rely on God) to make it through.

Normally fasting it restricting yourself from something you like. And during this time instead of doing whatever (such as eating), you spend that time seeking the Lord. You might praise Him, pray, or study scripture. You are taking something that you like to do, and instead, put God first. Traditional fasting was not eating. The Bible doesn't give any hard and fast rules. I would have to search to find a lot of scripture. Jesus did in the wilderness, and the elders can call one, but I can't think of any others right now.

I've never been taught different. Though i personally would recommend prayer. Frequent prayer will help you overcome when you fast because otherwise temptations do come. We see when JESUS was fasting in the desert the devil tempted him to change stones to bread . .. but JESUS didn't break down he rebuked the devil and kept his fast.

Also we are instructed not make it appear that we fast, but to be humble and fast in secret. GOD sees and will reward us publically for that which we do in private.

-LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.

There are other things you can deny yourself besides food. You can fast from anything that brings you pleasure - movies, shopping, reading, gossiping.

John 14:11 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you."
