I'd have to say yes because the Ruger 460 in the fastest production handgun bullet on the market, 2800fps and that is about the same as the old 30-06 with a 180gr.

Living alone is a lot higher risk than being with other people at home. YOU are the only set of ears in a house... and most people I socialize with are not very aware of what's going on around us anyway. The most complicated pistols on the planet are not rocket science as far as cleaning goes... and since you may have learned to take a 1911 apart under a shelter half ---in a swamp--- under the light of a red lensed flashlight... well.. we have come a long way. Glock, M & P Smith and Wessons, SA XD pistols are all the best of breed and easy to care for... they shoot good too. If I was buying a first gun.... Glock 19 in 9MM or a M&P compact would be right up on my list. Kahr arms has a line of pretty good personal defense pistols up to 45 ACP. Revolvers? Smith and Wesson still makes several versions of the venerable J frame. I prefer the older stainless or blued steel parents. Buying a used revolver seems complicated...but most I find have lived a quiet life in a drawer and were shot very little. Ruger still offers a good line of full and compact revolvers... I like the SP 101's Taurus sells a J frame competitor called the Model 85... these guns have been offered in light weight and ported variations.. probably the best deal out there at under $400 in most areas Cops are heavy. Guns are light. When you buy a pistol- get a little training to go along with it. The CC classes in most states are minimal... a couple of training session every year will make you a much better armed citizen and you will meet some of the finest folks at such events. Good Luck

High powered is all about comparison. How high is high powered? .44 magnum? .50 caliber? 20mm? 40mm grenade launcher? 12 lb Mountain Howitzer?
They make "pistols" that fire 7.62x39 and 5.56x45 (the rounds used in the AK-47 and M-16/Ar-15 respectively) They use the regular AR-15 reciever but are registered as a pistol meaning you can put on very short barrels but can't have a stock. It is legally a pistol... depends what you consider a pistol? I still say it is a short rifle. If you take an AR-15 and put on the barrel it is considered a short barreled rifle, thus illegal. It is all about termanology. These technecalities are what the gun grabbers love, if it is a grey area that is undefined they will exploit it to take as much away as they can.

It would be determined by what caliber it was. Where a 32, 38, or a 9 would be your regular pistol. A 357 Magnum or 45 would be considered High powered.

We would first have to decide on what the classification of "high powered" is. A handgun is a defensive weapon when you don't have time to access something more powerful or better, yadda. In that respect you would not consider it an offensive weapon. Rifles are high powered.

High powered based on what criteria? There is no "Institute of High Powered Firearms" that sets specifications for using that term so it is, in fact, meaningless.
