What can religion hurt? What if God is real, and you are sent to hell because you never believed? Why are you atheists in the first place?

I don't think any person should believe in god because they fear hell.. I'm not a GOD FEARING Christian, but a Christian because I believe in Jesus Christ and everything he did for us, not because I fear hell..

God Fearing Christians are scared people... Not a cool way to believe in a loving god...

Yeah, but what if God DOESN'T exist, and they spend their entire life following something that isn't there when they could just be enjoying their short and unpredictable lives while they still can?

Look, I'm a Christian, but you can't just decide to believe in God just because you MIGHT go to hell or MIGHT cease to exist. That is silly. Aliens could come down and kill everyone who didn't believe in them, but I'm not going to start believing in them. For someone who has not found God, there is NO difference between believing in God and believing that Zargon the Terrible from the planet Moochiebunk created mankind and is going to come down and rule over the blond people and kill the rest of us. Atheists are atheists because they have been given NO proof or evidence that God exists. So arguing that they should become religious just because "what can it hurt?" is illogical and a waste of time. They could argue the same thing back. Why not just become an atheist? What can it hurt? God might NOT exist, and you will have wasted your whole life believing he did.

It isn't that simple.

I am an Atheist because I reject the notion of any god or divine powers.

Religion doe nothing in my mind but keep the mass of people dummied down.

What can you being a Hindu hurt? What if their entire Pantheon is real and you suffer their fate of note believeing. Why are you a Christian in the first place?

I am willing to bet that you where likely born a Christian or in a very Strong Christian family.town what ever.

If you had been born in the middle east you would have likely been Muslim, If you had been born in India you would have likely been Hindu, If you had been born in Denmark in the age of the Vikings you would have been believing in Odin and Thor, If you had been born in Africa you would have worshiped the Great Juju of the Mountain. So the pure chance you are right on the happenstance of your birth is unlikely so its not if I am wrong but what if you are wrong about the great Juju

Pascal's Wager already? It's only 8:40 where I am!

Don't you think that an omnipotent god would see right through someone "believing" in him just so as not to go to hell? Religion hurts a lot - it makes people think Pascal's Wager is a great argument to use on atheists...

I read the bible. Cover to cover. That's why I'm an atheist.

Pascal's Wager? So early in the morning?

1.) What if Thor is real? Or Muhammed was right? Or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or the Invisible Pink Unicorn? Are you going to worry about all the possible contingencies of all the religions that have existed throughout the history of the world?

2.) With most religions, mere "belief" isn't enough. You have to put money in the collection plate, and drag yourself to the church every Sunday morning, and donate time to various church projects, and obey their rules -- all of which are time, money, and attention that could be better spent in more worthwhile pursuits.

3.) Most people here aren't atheists because they CHOOSE to be. Most are atheists because the complete lack of evidence supporting the existence of a god or gods COMPELS us to be atheists -- we couldn't call ourselves intellectually honest, otherwise. I'd even go so far as to say that many of us here wish we COULD believe; but there's simply no evidence to warrant such belief.

It's a little early for a drink.

This argument is so flawed. First, it assumes there is only one god to choose from. Second, it assumes that there is no harm in religion if there is no god, but I see a lot of wasted time spent in devotion to god. Lastly, is your god so naive to fall for the "I'll believe so I don't go to hell" ploy? If god is real, wouldn't he rather have true believers and not posers?

I am an atheist because it is rational, and logical.

Do you know this is Pascal's wager? I have to know whether to take a pony shot or a full shot. Even Pascal figured out his premise was flawed. Do some research. Check the question history, this has been presented a million times or more. Still a lousy reason to accept a theology. BTW, which God to accept? What if you have the wrong God/religion?

What can religion hurt? Lets see, how many people have been killed in gods name, or because they wouldn't forcefully believe in him or convert to a specific religion? Don't get me wrong, there's some good things about it however due to the number of insane people in the world it's just not a good idea to have something people feel so strongly about. I think we'd do much better without religion, and let people come to their own conclusions about the meaning of life. Eventhough it's a waste of time.

A famous writer wrote, "The meaning of life isn't a question to be answered, but a reality to be experienced." That line is so so so good. Stop worrying about things and overthinking things and go out and enjoy life.
